Pros And Cons Of The 2016 Election

The 2016 election is truly one election that most people will remember, but is it due to the media or the candidates? Most people would instantly say the candidates are the reason we will remember this election. These people would not be incorrect, but think, how did people get the information about each candidate? Almost everyone will say they got the information about the good and bad of each candidate from a form of media. Too bad the media might not be giving Americans all the necessary information they need to know. The media makes Americans believe what they are saying, when really they only are giving biased information, using ad Hominem attacks against the opposing party, and filtering out information that supports the opposing party. …show more content…
As Nicolas Carr, a well-respected author, states in his article “How Politics Breaks Out Brains and How We Can Put Them Back Together” “The trouble is when we’re so blinded by our partisanship that it overrides reason.” Many Americans do override this reason because they are so strongly influenced by what others say. People often trust the media in the information they give people, but it is not always correct, and can give Americans false or over-exaggerated information. The media is very liberal and “favors bitty over meaty” (Carr). Yes, the media does show viewers both sides, but in the 2016 election many people would agree they favored the good things about Hillary Clinton, and the bad things about Donald Trump. Some people may argue this statement because they are given this very liberal perspective, and they might also agree that the media showed the bad side of Hillary Clinton. Though the media showed Americans some of the bad things Hillary Clinton has done, many people are just overwhelmed by the news headlines and new stories about the bad things Donald Trump has …show more content…
In a video by Eli Pariser named “Beware of Online ‘Filter Bubbles’” he talks about and conducts a test that proves we only see very filtered information. One of Pariser’s tests consisted of him asking a few of his friends to search a certain topic and see what results they get, and with the results he concluded that each person has their own “Filter Bubble” (Pariser). These results that Pariser found only go to prove that the media gives people the information they feel or that will benefit them. In another article by Walter Lippmann named “The Indispensable Opposition” he states “It is a system of One-way communication; the opinions of the rulers from the broadcast outwardly to the mass of the people. But nothing comes back to the rulers from the people except the cheers.” His article was written in 1939, which just shows how much the media in general can deceive us with filtered information. It also shows that this problem is not one that has been occurring in the past year, but has been occurring for many years. In an Intelligence Squared debate called “When it Comes to Politics the Internet is Closing Our Minds” where Eli Pariser, Siva Vaidhaynathan, Evgeny Morosov, and Jacob Weisberg debated whether politics was influenced by media and the information they give us. All of the debaters no matter what side they were arguing from mentioned

In “Limiting Democracy: The American Media’s World View, and Ours” written by Glenn Greenwald, Greenwald explains the issues in American media that skew citizens views about the world, beliefs about certain countries, and cultural biases. Greenwald argues that “[Americans] all have an inherent resistance to believing that our own understanding of the political world is … limited.” This is due to the fact that the American media leaves so much out of the public’s eye that we don't think there is anything else worth discovering about the other side. The information American citizens are subject to, are made to help us feel proud of our country and think poorly of a differing one. This narrow view of world events is dangerous to the public because…

The Pros of a Donald Trump Presidency American politics have always fascinated me. But let’s be honest, politics can also be very dull, with its insipid candidates, anticlimactic voting system, and laws worded in such a way that would confuse even Joyce. The author observes that not only did the mainstream media get it wrong but it showed how the influence of the mainstream media has declined. With a lot of biased coverage, the media had put a lot effort at throwing the election at Hillary Clinton, by giving her unlimited and positive coverage, but surprisingly, she still lost in the elections. The author argues that there is only two steps the media can take after what happened in the U.S elections; the mainstream media would decide to match on with their biasness which would eventually make them irrelevant or the media should be honest, accept their flaws and change.
