A major issue that has grown over the past few years is texting while driving. Texting has become the most common way for people to communicate and it’s lead to people sending messages from behind the wheel. This has resulted in an increase in vehicular accidents and fatalities. While this has become a major problem, authorities are looking for a way to eliminate this issue. Despite texting while driving being illegal in most states people still continue to do the dangerous act without thinking of the possible consequences.

This common use of communication has it’s advantages and disadvantages. The easy access a cell phone provides could be the reason people text and drive. It’s very common now to see someone focused on their phone rather

As of June 2017, texting while driving is banned in 46 states and the District of Columbia. Two additional states ban texting while driving only for new drivers (Distracted Driving 3). Even though drivers are aware of the laws on texting while driving they continue to do it. In recent years the police have started cracking down on texting and driving because they’re trying to stop this problem. The laws are very strict about people being their phones behind the wheel, but it’s hard to enforce because it’s difficult to prove someone was on their phone. In most states the police can’t pull over a car for just texting they have to have another reason.

In the past years I’ve noticed companies starting campaigns to try to stop people from texting and driving. Companies such as Verizon and AT&T have made efforts to get people to stop texting and driving. The campaign “It can wait” was started by AT&T and they’re trying to reach out to the younger generation to prevent them from texting and driving. The main premise of the campaign is that no text is important enough to risk the life of yourself or others (Anti-texting 1).
