As of June 2017, texting while driving is banned in 46 states and the District of Columbia. Two additional states ban texting while driving only for new drivers (Distracted Driving 3). Even though drivers are aware of the laws on texting while driving they continue to do it. In recent years the police have started cracking down on texting and driving because they’re trying to stop this problem. The laws are very strict about people being their phones behind the wheel, but it’s hard to enforce because it’s difficult to prove someone was on their phone. In most states the police can’t pull over a car for just texting they have to have another reason.
In the past years I’ve noticed companies starting campaigns to try to stop people from texting and driving. Companies such as Verizon and AT&T have made efforts to get people to stop texting and driving. The campaign “It can wait” was started by AT&T and they’re trying to reach out to the younger generation to prevent them from texting and driving. The main premise of the campaign is that no text is important enough to risk the life of yourself or others (Anti-texting 1).
