One fact is that between the critic ratings comparing the first and last movie has only gone down three percent on rotten tomatoes. That means, according to the critics the movie’s are still in high quality. The first Star Wars ever made, A New Hope, had 93 % rotten tomatoes and The newest, The Last Jedi, having 90%. Although in the middle of the movie release dates there is a massive gap. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clone’s didn’t get good ratings when they came out in 1999 and 2003. But right after that, the movie of Anakin developing into Darth Vader came out. It was called Revenge of the Sith and it went up a lot in ratings compared to the other two when it came out in 2006. It could be because it shows Darth Vader and explains a lot about him as well as where Luke and Leia came from. It had a bit of that ancient Star Wars element to it. And similarly, so does the new movies. So that does mean that the revival of Star Wars movies actually could have been profitable for Star Wars. Up to this point, it seems it has for the critics at least.
However, the audience ratings are different. While the first Star Wars movies got a 96% in audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, the newest film only got a 49%. So to the audience's point of view, which is the most important for movie watchers to know, the score is pretty low. That means that you not as likely to get recommended to see that movie.
