In the video Hands-On Science with Squishy Circuits it talks about how easy it is to make electricity with things you probably have in your kitchen. Annmarie explains how play dough made out of salt conducts electricity. Using sugar play dough, salt play dough, and LED lights she demonstrates how it makes electricity. The salt…
Introduction Many biological processes are pH dependent, to illustrate, stomach is at a relatively lower pH than other organs for proper function of digestive enzymes. In particular, buffer is essential for maintaining cellular functions. For instance, protein intake and metabolism generates about 70mM of H+ daily (Silverthorn, Johnson, Ober, Garrison, & Silverthorn, 2012), which could lower pH of human blood to as low as 3. To limit the drastic change in blood pH, human body has three buffer systems – bicarbonate, monohydrogen phosphate, and ammonia. Buffer is made up of weak acid and its conjugate base.…
Question: Which salt type can melt ice at a quicker rate, Magnesium Chloride (MgCl₂) or Sodium Chloride (NaCl)? Background: The different states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have a definite shape and volume, and have very little energy because the molecules in a solid are in a fixed position. Liquids have a definite volume, and have the second most/least amount of energy between the three states because its molecules move freely but closely together.…
"Energy Story", "Hands-On Science with Squishy Circuits" and "Conducting Solutions". All very informative sources about electricity and how its conducted. In Energy Story what the author is explaining the basics of the science behind the amazing process that allows us to have electronic instruments that run on this source of energy. The purpose of the article "Energy Story", is to inform the reader about the scientific force behind this process, and what goes on when we flip a light switch. It also reviews the many components of the atoms or ions, that are involved in the flow of electricity through a circuit.…
The attraction that holds the oppositely charged ions together in the ionic compound is called an ionic bond. Ionic compounds are hard, brittle solids with high melting points. Most ionic compounds are also electrolytes, which are compounds that separate into ions when they dissolve in water, producing solutions that conduct electricity. In addition, most ionic compounds form three-dimensional crystals, in which many of each kind of ion in a fixed ration are held together by their ionic bonds. Sodium hydroxide is an ionic compound, which sodium is the metal cation (Na+), and hydroxide is the non-metal anion (OH-), more specifically, sodium Hydroxide’s hydroxide is a polyatomic ion, an ion made up of more than one atom that acts as a single particle.…
The chemical properties of yttrium are similar to those of the rare earth elements. It reacts with cold water slowly, and with hot water very rapidly. It dissolves in both acids and alkalis. An alkali is the chemical opposite of an acid. Sodium hydroxide ("household lye") and limewater are common alkalis.…
I think the decision to stop lithium was significant for the downward spiral of Evan's behavior, but you are right it was a matter of time for Evan to act as he did, however; if the family decided to keep the lithium as long term treatment until they found other option the out come could have been different for the family and especially for Evan…
Conclusion Through burning varied solutions in a flame the information that is found becomes very useful. While burning any solution in a flame it produces a flame on the visible line spectrum. This flame color allows for a brief understanding of the energy the solutions possess. The least energy in the visible light spectrum is the color red and the most energy is violet. According to the data found in the experiment we come to the conclusion that the least energy is Lithium Nitrate due to the color being a dark red and the most energy is Potassium Chloride due to its color being a shade of purple.…
Sodium is an important electrolyte that helps with electrical signals in the body, allowing muscles to fire and the brain to work. It is half of the electrical pump at the cell level that keeps sodium in the plasma and potassium inside the cell. Electrolytes are important because they are what your cells use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses across themselves and to other cells. Your kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in your blood constant despite changes in your body. For example, when you exercise, you lose electrolytes in your sweat, particularly sodium and potassium.…
Salts and molecules have different properties because salts are ionic compounds and molecules are covalent compounds. Justification: Salt is an ionic compound. An ionic compound is formed by ionic bonding between ions of opposite charge. Sodium Chloride and Potassium Bromide are both salts that have an ionic compound.…
Many of lithium’s compounds are used as mood stabilizing drugs for treating and controlling manic episodes such as manic depression, bipolar disorder and aggressive or self-harming behaviour. Lithium would also be the quickest way to change erratic behaviour because of its atom structure. Lithium is a group one metal which is very reactive. This is because lithium has one electron in its outer most shell and has a goal to share/lend the electron in order to gain a full outer shell and become stable. Meaning that once the lithium drug is in the body it becomes widely spread throughout the central nervous system and interacts with neurotransmitter and receptors, decreasing norepinephrine (noradrenaline) release and increasing serotonin synthesis…
Our world cares and nurtures over 7 billion people -which is rapidly rising-, drains about about 400 quadrillion BTUs of energy each year, and desperately tries to meet the basic needs of every human being. Every year, we demand more and more from our Mother Earth while her supplies cannot replenish as fast as we take, and consequently, will not meet our energy needs in the next upcoming years. Specifically in the United States, in 2014 we consumed nearly 80.50 quadrillion BTUs of energy from petroleum, natural gas, and coal; which also is an increase from 2013 of approximately 1.03 quadrillion BTUs. It is no doubt that we need to begin to take action and find new innovations involving groundbreaking technology and sciences in order to meet…
Hypotheses The hand capturing method allows more accuracy when looking at our datum for the mean of body lengths of the Corophium Volutator. While using this method we are sampling from a wider surface at low tide, which allows us to pick out more of a variety of these organisms from the environment we are studying. As well as the Corophium Volutators otherwise known as mud shrimps have not been exposed to anything in this sampling technique therefore they are in their most natural habitat, where as in the sediment sifting method they are exposed to seawater. The hand capturing method allows us to sample from a larger surface therefore our datum will be more precise giving us a more accurate representation of the organisms in this environment.…
In this experiment, various electrochemical cells were measured and calculated to determine their electrical cell potential. In the electrochemical cell Zn (s) │Zn2+ (0.10 M) ││ Cu2+ (0.10 M) │ Cu(s), E cell potential was determined to be 1.040 V while the standard E˚ cell potential was 1.10 V. In the electrochemical cell Zn (s) │Zn2+ (0.10 M) ││ Cu2+ (1.0 M) │ Cu(s) E cell potential was determined to be 1.060 V while the standard E˚ cell potential was 1.10 V. In the electrochemical cell Cu (s) │Cu2+ (0.010 M) ││ Cu2+ (1.0 M) │ Cu(s), E cell potential was determined to be 0.032 V while the standard E˚ cell potential was 0.00 V. The E cell value in the electrochemical cell Cu (s) │Cu2+ ( M ) ││ Cu2+ ( M) │ Cu(s) was determined…
