The aim of this essay is to explore the meaning of Social work, to explain the pros and cons of being a Social worker and to further expatiate the function of Social work in our society.

As a profession, Social work traced its origin as far back as 1869, it’s a progress mainly experienced within the United Kingdom and United States. After the end of feudalism, those people in poverty were seen as a great threat to social order, so the government started an organisation that formed the Poor Law and created an organised system to provide care to them. During this time, rescue societies such as Charity Organisation Society (COS) were formed to provide social support to alleviate the problems of poverty, disease, prostitution, mental illness, and other afflictions (Wilson et al 2008).
The word Social work can be defined in many ways, depending on the way it’s being perceived, as illustrated by Payne, ‘’there will never be a final answer that define Social Work in one way’’ (Payne 2005), this is due to many reasons which includes government policy and legislation, the environment and country in its being pratice. Newly-qualified Social workers (NQSWs) have difficulty finding employment despite high vacancy rates, with 27 per cent of NQSWs in England being unemployed in 2011. Information’s gathered by Community Care proof that, out of the 4,082 newly qualified Social workers (NQSWs) who registered with the GSCC after graduating in 2010, 27% remain unemployed in England, 7% in Wales and 3% in Scotland leaving England on a very high side of unemployment compare with this other two countries (Community Care
