As most of us know making new friends can be incredibly challenging, but thanks to OSN, this activity has been made easier. More than 25% of teens report that social networking makes them feel less shy, 28% report feeling more outgoing, and 20% report feeling more confident (Common Sense media, 2012). Being less socially adept can be very upsetting, and can cause depression and lack of self-worth amongst young adults, University is a time in ones life where friendships are very important, because being away from home is hard, and having no friends to support you through the transition can be extremely damaging to one’s self esteem. But thanks to social networking students have a greater sense of their identity and this can contribute greatly to their academic success. In July 2012 Americans spent 74.0 billion minutes on social media via a home computer, 40.8 billion minutes via apps, and 5.7 billion minutes via mobile web browsers, a total of 121.1 billion minutes on social networking sites (Nielsen Wire, 2012). Looking at the numbers given by Nielsen Wire, it would be rational to jump to the conclusion that online social networking attracts people to waste valuable time of their lives. University students have a higher tendency to put off coursework to the last minute, because of their constant engagement in social networking sites.
