The Internet is a unique tool that is used every day for many positive reasons. However, the Internet has had some negative effects on society as well. For years now, there has been a debate on whether social media is more of a positive or a negative, and each side can be argued. Ever since 1960 when the first computer prototype called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) was released, media has taken an effect on the world (Andrews). Having such easy access to media has created a debate about the pros and cons of the use of social networking sites. Social networking sites have not only taken over the world, but have taken over the minds of the youth. However, recently, my opinion has been swayed. Now I believe that social media create more negatives than positives in our society. Not only is social media affecting social skill, but it also affects a person’s IQ. Ever since I received my first iPod touch, I have felt like I have been slowly losing intelligence. There are so many reasons that expose social media for the damaging network that it is. I unfortunately have become a victim of the daily brainwashing of social media. I do not go out and do as many social activities as I used to. Social media has consumed my life. Instead of stepping outside and enjoying the fresh air, I sit inside on my phone, scrolling through various social media applications hoping for something new and exciting to get posted. When in reality, life would be more exciting if I just put my phone down. Musician Will Jay states in his song titled “@nti-Social Media” that “What happened to good old fashioned talking to one another? […] We can’t pay attention for more than 6 seconds” (@nti-Social Media). Social media has taken over the world. I think that people should take a minute to reflect on how often they are on social media. I personally try to take at least an hour of my day to strictly stay off of social media. I would suggest this method to anyone who is feeling like all they do sit at home on their phone or computer. Sometimes becoming disconnected is the only way to truly become
