John C. Calhoun was the seventh vice president of the United States of American. He was considered the strongest defender of slavery. He argued that slavery was the road to the American freedom. “Many in the South once believed that it was a moral and political evil; that folly and delusion are gone; we see it now in its true light, and regard it as the most safe and stable basis for free institutions in the world.” (John C. Calhoun thinking slavery was the road to American freedom, and proslavists saying that slaves helped them economically was why overall proslavists defended slavery as a whole. Proslavists thought it was required to have slavery to benefit them as a whole. Without having slavery in the population, there would be a lot of damage to the population in addition, to both races. For example, blacks being lazy and not working. Whites being affected by this because of getting no beneficial income from their crops. Overall, proslavists defend slavery to the ideas to what they
