Mala in se crimes are those that have victims and typically they are universally agreed to be morally wrong. The nature of mala in se crimes create a great deal of fear with in the community, as well as, greatly diminish the trust of people within society. The culture that he exhibited was likely conducive of many traits that are shown in the African American culture and community. Likewise, in the African American culture mental health treatment is often viewed through a negative lens. Mental health treatment is often perceived as a weakness and causes many individuals to shun treatment. According to an article in “In the African American community, many people misunderstand what a mental health condition is and don’t talk about this topic. This lack of knowledge leads many to believe that a mental health condition is a personal weakness or some sort of punishment from God. African Americans may be reluctant to discuss mental health issues and seek treatment because of the shame and stigma associated with such conditions” (Nami.org). being in a cultural environment that stigmatizes mental health can foster self-medicating using drugs and alcohol.
