The next main argument of pro-life is the argument of significant health risks of abortion to both the mother and the fetus. Starting with claims that a fetus can feel pain during an abortion, Dr. Maureen Condic, Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy said, “ there is a universal agreement that pain is detected by the fetus during the first trimester” (ProCon). Dr. Bernard N. Nathanson M.D, also later said, “We see (in ultrasound image) the child’s mouth open in a silent scream… This is the silent scream of a child threatened imminently with extinction” (ProCon). This would coincide with the methods used in abortion one, the drug use which is known as the “morning-after pill” which can be used in a higher dosage within the first fifty weeks of pregnancy (Porter and O’Connor). Then there is the surgical method, which basically vacuums out the fetus by draining the uterine lining (Porter and O’Connor). A study of mental health discovered that woman who were denied an abortion “felt more anger, regret, and resentment towards their circumstances” which lead them to develop significant depression (ProCon). As to the ninety-six percent of women who had been able to receive a legal abortion said, “it felt like the right decision” (Lunneborg 25). A study performed by the University of California found that over ninety-five percent of women, who were unable to receive abortions “stayed in abusive relationships, were below the poverty line on the economy scale, and developed significant psychological disorders,” as compared to those who did have an abortion (ProCon). Some were said to “get out of bad relationships, have better careers and were more ready to have a child on their own terms”
