Maximum security prisons like this one (Clinton Correctional Facility) are meant to keep inmates under close supervision and very tight parameters. Matt, (one of Sweat’s…
Andersonville Prisoner of War Camp Traveling 3 hours from Marietta to Andersonville was a painful and cramped car ride but it was worth it to see the beautiful memorials they had set up for all the Union soldiers who died at Andersonville and the informational museum. At the museum, we learned all about prisoners of war and their lifestyles, such as how they lived in disease filled camps and died by the hundreds daily, and how they had almost no food so they starved. The museum also had a small movie theater that showed what their families had gone through and their emotions when they found out their husbands might not be coming home.…
Men are beaten to a bloody pulp, they fight, and possibly die. Former corrections officer Darryl Bryant says he feels bad for any adolescent who ends up there. They will be violated, and that sounds like something totally normal. What is happening alone should lead to a breakdown and reconstruction of the prison system. Although Rikers is one of the worst prisons in the United States, it is not the only…
San Quentin prison system is not responsibility because they conduct their job well by placing Sherry in which they thought it was a safe environment and giving her medical treatment and returning her to segregation…
None of these people knew how to run a prison and this is where the blame…
We walked over to the new jail that is currently used and met with the chief deputy who took us on our tour. Unlike the HCJ, we were able to see where families come and talk to their loved ones through a telephone and a window, the kitchen, the suicide rooms, the drunk tank, and my personal favorite, the cell blocks. We were able to go past a cell block where inmates were currently in and see how their living conditions were and what all they were able to do in their confined area. I enjoyed the basement of the jail where inmates are on work release. They are allowed to leave to go to work but then have to come back right away.…
The Youth Criminal Justice Act has changed our country both in positive and negative ways. We have noticed that the criminal offences coming from the youth has decreased ever since the YCJA has been introduced. We are grateful that the YCJA gives our youth the opportunity to change and develop into new citizens of Canada. Without the Youth Criminal Justice Act our youth may not be who they are today. The YCJA insures that the citizens of our society are safer for their own being and can enjoy their lives without any worries.…
Inmates get treated poorly all the time, all around the world (except in Germany). Certain TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and Prison Break give us a small insight to how prison is, but they don’t show us the worst…
According to Morris & Rothman (1995), the guiding philosophy underlying correctional policies and practices in the early twentieth century was that a criminal is considered mentally ill and needs to be cured. Before the Progressive Movement after World War II, there were efforts made to change how the correctional policies and procedures were played out. Sadly, most often the actual design of a prison was based off of budgetary concern rather than actual sound penal theory. During the early twentieth century guards were not trained, and basked in the use of their unlimited authority. For instance, even though the Elmira Reformatory was thought to be humane at the time, the guards and staff used their authority to instill fear in the inmates of potential severe corporal punishments.…
I accepted and spent most of a single day walking through the prison unit. Of all the sights I saw and sounds I heard, the one feature of my tour that gave me the creeps occurred in the "administrative segregation" wing of the massive prison complex. I was invited to step into a cell. I did. Then the door closed behind me.…

Not one person or offenders included, expects prison to be a paradise . Upon prison, all inmates must face the mental and physical challenge of adjusting to prison, and some fail or just barely pass the test. The ones that fail are usually the ones that die in prison by being assaulted or taking one’s life due to the fact that they can’t take the prison anymore and the ones that pass are usually the ones that move up on top of the food chain. For example the gang leaders in the prison and even those who join gangs just to feel protected. Including the ones that are close to the prison guards that pay them off to gain special privileges.…
Prison conditions are worsening all across the world, especially within African countries, such as Rwanda. Rwandan prisons have an unhealthy environment — lack of space, mistreatment, and neglect — for the inmates that are locked up. The effects of the destructive conditions that inmates experience range in severity, from infected feet to death. In addition, these problems are not recent occurrences; these complications have been around for over 20 years. By looking at this issue from an ethical standpoint, it is shown that a solution is needed to improve these deteriorating conditions regarding Rwandan prisons — specifically the Gitarama Central Prison.…
