Over the past few years there has been controversy over whether or not participation trophies are a positive or a negative thing. When a child receives a participation trophy, they will eventually start expecting them whether he or she tries or not. It is common sense that the player or team that gets first place receives a trophy. However, the team or player that does not get first place does not deserve one. It comes to reason that the child might have tried his or her hardest, but only the player or team that gets first place deserves the trophy. This is what makes the competition. If everyone received a trophy, what would be the reason to compete? If a person does not have to work for first place, then why would anyone …show more content…
In an article called “Should everyone get a trophy,” it talks about how there is this child that is not very good at sports and still has all kinds of awards on his wall. The article says, “Lucas admits that he didn't exactly earn these trophies for his athletic prowess.” This shows that he knows that he did not work hard for these trophies. The article also points out that “…some experts suggest that giving trophies to everyone sends the wrong message. In life, most people are not rewarded for simply doing what's required. A student doesn't get an A just for going to class. An employee doesn't get a raise just for arriving to work on time. Shouldn't only the hardest-working or highest-performing athletes get the accolades?” This is a good point because it is true. The people that work hard should be the only one that receives a trophy. In an article called “Trophy Overload,” it states, “Belief of many coaches that the awards rewarded poor behavior and have created a situation where the children expect praise regardless of their effort.” The point that if a child does not put up any effort, they do not deserve a trophy is a true reason why all children do not deserve one. There are two reasons for them to think this way. Some might say that every child puts out effort during the sports events, so therefore they deserve an award. Then there are some people that bring up the children that are young and say that they deserve an award. Although, all children that make up a team do not have to try hard. That is why participation trophies make it hard for anyone on the team to put out any effort. The reason being is that the children that do not try hard in practices still get the same thing as the one that tries their hardest, and that just is not fair. Also, there is a point to children being too young. But, there should be an age limit to when they start understanding what is exactly going on. If you give one first grader an award and not the other, the one without the award is going to feel left out. Nonetheless, if you give a eleventh grader an award and not the other, they will understand that it was because they are not worthy enough of that award. Also, some people think that there should be different awards that should be given to the players such as ‘Most Improved’ and awards that are similar. Although these might be good awards to give out, in a work place a person does not get a raise for being ‘Most
