I think one must consider the nature of the healthcare industry before a fixed determination can be made and if that particular sector should be profitable or non profitable.

Albeit ethicality is a virtuous gesture, but realistically how can the healthcare field survive if every organization within the healthcare field is operating as a non profit organization. The majority of nonprofit organizations provide services free of charge or a scale based fee vs a profitable organization will charge the actual fee or services will be billed to ones private insurance.
There are various pros and cons between a nonprofit and a for profit organization in the healthcare industry. The major difference between a non profit and for profit organizations of course is economical satisfaction; secondly for profit healthcare organizations may not base their culture by ethical implications of wanting to assist the needy patient.
