Pros And Cons Of Modifying Animals

Improved Essays
GMO is an organism in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. Scientist have been taking a piece of genetic material from one organism (plants or animals) and putting it in a chromosome of a animal. Genetically modifying animals have been around since the 1970’s. “Genetic engineering is able to create whole organisms that are not natural to the planet, and whose specific genetic make-up is as much a result of human manipulation as it is natural selection.” (Perzigian, animallaw) So what's the issue with it all of a sudden? Is finding out what we can do with these animals a bad thing? There's a two sides to every story, the good side that says we should continue with modifying these animals, and a …show more content…
Animals such as farm animals have been engineered to resist disease, grow faster, and reproduce better than past generations. Adding a trait that can fasten the process of breeding the desired genotype can be created into that current generation instead of having to wait for that trait to be brought out or the offspring has to reach that maturity stage to bred. Saving animals that are near extinction can be saved by fast reproduction. Breeding though can be super random on what genes they get from each parent. So with modifying them they can be be more predictable. Genetic Modifying them moves discrete genes or blocks of genes at a time. For example the growth of genetically modified salmon can make the salmon grow larger from their offspring before. Almost 3x the length that they usually are. These traits that are transferred can be more predictable for the scientist the wondering how big these baby salmon will grow. This example shows that having a more predictable reproduction can benefit our research and the way that animals can reproduce faster can help animals from going

Genetic modification in both animals and plants for the purpose of faster and voluptuous growth rate is rapidly increasing. The three articles that were located, all revolve around the aspect of genetic modification in the food we consume. Genetically modified food are food derived from organisms that have undergone changes in their DNA through the processes of genetic engineering. It takes many steps to modify the genetics of an organism and they include isolating a particular gene and duplicating it several times. Additionally, there are a vast amount of benefits and concerns of genetic modification in food.…

Many people think that GMOs are bad and that they mess with Mother Nature, and it’s technically playing god. But there are reasons for genetically modifying organisms because it can help for the betterment of mankind or it could just be for further learning the science of GMOs. In my opinion I think that GMOs are bad for the economy because of the many bad possibilities that could come from it. Such as:genetically modified corn and soy which are fed to rats, and that could lead to kidney liver. Even though GMOs are thoroughly tested there are many health risks that can cause humanity to be in a world epidemic.…

A topic that comes up often in conversations in both my classes and in society is genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. It's been widely debated about whether or not these scientific advances are harmful to humans and the environment. People need to learn the actual facts about GMOs before making the decision to support or oppose them.…

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are in most ways beneficial to agriculture. GM crops could stimulate growth and nutrition in developing countries, and there are also no completely proven risks to safety. With more research and labeling of GMOs, the country could become more accepting of this new development in agriculture. This would be a benefit for everyone. GM crops are both easier to grow and more efficient.…

GMOs have the potential to do multiple things. For those of you that may not know GMOS (or Genetically modified organisms) are organisms that have been created through gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). They are a safe way to slow down pollution and use less land in crop production. GMOs also provide many health benefits, and could also be a leading cause in ending world hunger. Currently many people are opposing GMOs because GMOs are a relatively young concept, and they believe GMOs only benefit the consumer.…

No! I don’t think that is a good idea! If steps are taken to reduce the movement of people, food and manufactured goods around the world, the global market will be extremely affected and there will be reduced in free flow of business transactions. Travel is a continuous process that often required travellers to partake in global activities of moving goods and services to every corner of the world. It is understandable that travelling activities can easily spread diseases around the world but alternate solution would be much better than reducing the level of human interaction.…
