Imagine being at work, school, church, the mall, the club, the movie theaters, or even in your own home and being afraid, now stop imagining, did anything change? No, because this is real life, this the real world, the world that we live in today. While The Second Amendment is used to protect Americans and their right to bear arms, It makes you think are our liberal gun laws, worth the ramifications on the wellbeing of society. A mass shooting means that 4 or more people were shot in one place so these statistics do not include the occasions where people were only injured or less than 4 people were killed. There has been 436 people killed in mass shootings, 435 injured from July 18, 1984 to June 12, 2016 (LA times). In my own field research, …show more content…
Some believe that the AR-15 is suitable for home defense when in reality it’s not, the AR-15 is known to be an over powering weapon, the rounds can over penetrate not only endangering your family but your neighbors as well. The New York daily times calls it “a mass murderer’s best friend”, and in all honesty it is. On December 14, 2012, 20 students and 6 adults were killed at sandy hook elementary by Adam Lanza, On July 20, 2012, 12 people were killed while 70 others were injured at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado by James Eagan Holmes, On December 2, 2015, 14 people were killed and 22 were injured in an office during a holiday event in San Bernardino California by Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, the common factor in all these mass shootings is all of the perpetrators used the AR-15 to carry out their senseless crime (Gregorian). In my field research where I interviewed both FIU staff and students, when asked the question “Do you believe civilians should have access to military style weapons?” 100% of the people interviewed said No. This is a weapon of war, not something that should be used and made available to civilians everywhere for the sake of “freely exercising their second amendment rights”, because this is not what our founding fathers had in mind when they wrote it. “The boundaries of the Second Amendment do not coincide with the boundaries of gun control.”(

I remember it like it was yesterday; the multitude of breaking news stories coming through on my phone about a tragedy that would soon start outrage and lead to revolution. On February 14, 2018, 12:18pm in Parkland, Florida a former student, Nickolas Cruz, of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School opened fire on his former school, killing 17 and wounding 17 others. Word finally came around that the weapon used was an AR-15 semi-automatic style assault rifle. Many of us, including myself pondered the idea, how could a 19-year old access an assault rifle of this kind?…

The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights states clearly that the people’s right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed on. This has led to one of the most complicated and volatile issues in America today. People on both sides of this issue have strong beliefs. Some argue that when our founding fathers wrote the bill of rights, the guns were not as deadly as the ones available today. As of December 1st 2015, there have been 335 days in the year and 351 mass shootings in the United States, just in 2015 alone (Ingraham). Trying to find the actual amount of Americans killed in mass shootings is tricky, because “Mass Shooting Tracker” defines a mass shooting as “four or more people are shot in a spree setting, likely without a cooling off period”, which is different than the FBI’s definition (“Mass Shooting Tracker”). According to the Mass Shooting Tracker, if using the FBI’s definition of a mass killing, there have roughly been 196 Americans killed. If using the Mass Shooting Tracker definition there have roughly been 481 Americans killed in a Mass Shooting just in 2015, which this number will continue to climb. Whichever definition you use, this number is high and extremely scary (“Mass Shooting Tracker”).…

“Since 1968, there have been 1.516 million gun related deaths on United States territory compared to the 1.396 million war casualties since the founding of the U.S.” (Hristova). Mike McLively, director of Giffords Law Center’s Urban Gun Violence Initiative, said gun violence “is silently affecting everyone and determines whether or not you live in a safe community or not.” Although not all are directly affected by this terrible act of violence, mass shootings are an issue for the United States population because mass shootings diminish the economy and drastically inflate the cost of living. The ripple effect that mass shootings create diminish the economy which makes gun violence one of the most important problems in the United States.…

Gun violence in America Gun violence is an all-time high. In the wake of Sandy Hook, widespread concern forced legislators to take a second glance at our gun laws. When twenty children and six educators were gunned down, many citizens were stunned, outraged, and begged authorities to pass more crucial gun laws because with fewer guns, there could possibly be fewer incidents involving gun violence. Many people believe that the widespread availability of guns is making society unsafe. Each year, nearly 100,000 Americans are shot, 32,000 of them die, 47 children are shot every day, and eight of them die, according to the U.S. News Digital Weekly.…

Professors from Bloomberg School of Public Health Daniel W. Webster and Jon S. Vernick reveled intriguing results from their study. “In addition to the 31,672 people killed by guns in 2010, another 73,505 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for nonfatal bullet wounds, and 337,960 nonfatal violent crimes were committed with guns. Of those 31,672 dead, 61 percent were suicides, and the vast majority of the rest were homicides by people who knew one another”(shermer). It is now know that some Americans in society take their freedom to bare arms for granted. Every day some Americans are being shot, wither it is out of jealously or hate, their lives are on a balance of life or death.…

Many women and children have died from these mass shootings and not one thing has been done to prevent them from occurring again. Mass Shootings and the Moral Decline in the U.S. Megan jones 2 There have been over 294 mass shootings in the U.S so far in 2015. Many people have been left wounded or dead due to them. Yet they have very little attention payed to them due to a combination of the FBI’s definition of a mass shooting being when 4 or more people are killed, and because no one who enjoys a lack of gun control wants to put an emphasis on the fact that people are being killed, very easily, because of guns. Mass shootings have become so routine that unless they are absolutely disgusting and horrendous, very little focus is put on them, and even when they are disgusting and horrendous, the media, along with individuals, tend to sensationalize the shooting and act…

Three hundred eighty-five is the number of people killed in a mass shooting in 2016 according to the Gun Violence Archive which reflects the number of incidents reported and verified. Seven in a college town, five in an airport, and 49 in a nightclub the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. While the death tolls, places and memorial photos change there is one common characteristic; the weapon chosen. Though to be clear it is difficult to define what is considered a mass shooting and the numbers may reflect this gray area. For example, on February, 25 2016 a gunman shot and killed three people and injured 14 more in Hesston, KS this is the 33rd mass shooting of 2016 or is it actually just the 2nd?…

Guns are used all around the world, but here in the United States, we need to keep our gun usage limited with gun laws. Gun laws are put into action to make sure firearms are used responsibly; however, people will always find a way to break these laws no matter how many are made. Our Second Amendment, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”, gives U.S. citizens the right to own a weapon and use it for the right reasons. Gun laws will not reduce the amount of gun deaths in the U.S. because gun laws do not determine crime; gun ownership determines crime numbers. There were 460,000 gun deaths in the U.S. between 1999-2013 and this was the 12th leading cause of death.…
