Arguments Against Mandatory Voting

Mandatory voting has become a problem in our conversations in the United States, and I believe it will continue to be one unless we do something. Mandatory voting will mean that we will be forced to vote. There are more articles about the cons of mandatory voting then about the pros, for example. Although mandatory voting will help with voters turnout, it will not help with a new president. We would also have to deal with everyone wanting to pick a random person because they don’t care or don’t like any of the candidates. Another con to mandatory voting is the criminals, and people with disabilities. What is the government going to do with them? We all know that criminals can’t vote, and neither can people with disabilities. In addition to this, mandatory voting will go against our right of freedom.

Lisa Hill also has an opinion about this problem. She says in her article “Is voting just a right or is it also a duty?” Is it? She believes it is. She backs up her theory saying “Democratic citizens owe it to each other to vote so that, together, they can constitute and perpetuate democracy and collectively enjoy the benefits of living in a properly functioning democratic society where everyone counts.” Each election we work together to get the best president that we can, but with only 37% of eligible Americans voted this year we can fail to get a great president.
