Mandatory School Uniforms
The practice of requiring students to wear uniforms is becoming more common in public schools all over the United States. Uniform policies are on the rise throughout the country, with nearly one in five schools requiring them. There are many controversial opinions regarding the pros and cons of mandating school uniforms. . Proponents can argue that school uniforms result in safer schools and equality amongst the students. Those that oppose can argue that it can be initially costly for families and it violates the First Amendment and restricts a student’s right to express their individuality (Yeung, 2009).

It disables them from expressing their personalities through clothing, which hinders them from their independence and confidence. Critics say that individualism plays an important role when one transitions from childhood into adulthood and uniforms keeps students from this self-development. Critics may also claim that the initial cost of uniforms can be very expensive. Though proponents can argue that uniforms are a cheaper alternative to buying a school wardrobe every year, critics claim that the initial cost of buying many uniforms at once can be very expensive. Critics also say that uniforms are uncomfortable especially during hot seasons, where it can be more comfortable to slip on a pair of shorts and comfortable shirt instead of wearing a collared shirt that can somewhat be an annoyance. School uniforms clearly have their pros and cons and whether parents and students agree or not is completely their choice. Introducing school uniforms can be very beneficial to public schools on many reasons. On a personal note, I believe there are more positive advantages that advocate school uniforms than the disadvantages that oppose
