As Mark was driving to school on a Friday morning, he heard a notification on his iPhone 6. He quickly looked down to grab his phone, but before he could lift his head, he heard a loud noise. He looked up, and before he could react, he ran full speed into another car. Mark was only 15, but since he was being so irresponsible he got himself and another person killed. The driving age in Georgia should not be lowered because teens are too distracted by their phones, lowering the driving age would increase traffic levels, and teens are too immature, irresponsible, and reckless. The Georgia Department of Driver Services requires teens to follow a graduated driver's license process to help teens become a safer driver (Georgia Teen Drivers Guide). This graduated driver’s license applies to teen drivers who are 15 to 18 years old and it includes age restrictions to advance to a the next type of license. Nowadays almost every teenager has a smartphone that they use every day. Not only are these phones expensive, but they are also very distracting. A study from the University of Utah indicated that the reaction time of a teen driver using a cell phone is the same as that of a 70-year-old driver who is not using a cell phone (Don’t Text & Dive). Many kids that are 13 and 14 would hear their phone go off and completely dismiss anything that is happening around them just to answer their phone. Having teenagers like this on the road would put so many people in danger, and this would cause the rate of deaths from car crashes to raise. Even though a few teens are responsible, too many kids would treat driving as an activity rather than a tool.
