I personally think they need to keep the coal mines. First of all because coal makes energy, we could make a bunch of money off of it, and jobs.

My first reason is, coal makes energy. If we don't have coal we don't have power. Power is really important because we won't be able to have lights, television, and air condition. Therefore coal is really important for us to have power.

Since the beginning of the coal mining industries in the 1800s, thousands of mines have been created, extracting the precious mineral, and then dumped, empty and hollow. Once industries finished with a certain area, it would be dropped and they would move on, drilling in another location. The act of reclaiming these mines did not come to light until 1977 when the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed by Congress after they saw the disruption in the environment. This act put a strain on the profits of many coal mining industries, such as Peabody Energy and Alpha Natural Resources. Now, Peabody Energy and Alpha Natural Resources wrongly reclaim their retired mines as a way to protect their profits, doing the bare minimum of reclamation.…

The article ‘Is geoengineering a bad idea?’, by Karl Mathiesen, is about techniques that could be used to reduce the effects of climate change. The two techniques are, carbon dioxide removal and albedo modification. The first is self-explanatory, remove carbon in the atmosphere and put it underground. The second technique makes the earth more reflective so the warming by the sun isn’t as intense. Interestingly enough, increasing the earth reflection could be possible right now, but may lead to unplanned problems, where removing the carbon may be more costly, but have less risky side effects.…
