Lying can be used to save relationships but without losing another value that could be lost due to sharing the truth. An example in a situation is when with some friends and you can only invite one friend over, so you lie that no one can come over. Lies can be also used in other ways for example humor and being sarcastic are sometimes part of stories to make things more interesting.
