Nucleophilic additions to the carbonyl group of carboxylic acids and their derivatives lead to unstable intermediate which react further to regenerate the carbon-oxygen double bond. Therefore, acyl halides and anhydrides are the most stable reactive carboxylic acid derivatives. The least reactive are amides and esters and carboxylic will have an intermediate reactivity. The more stable the leaving group the more the carboxyl derivatives. Therefore, the carbon in the carbonyl of propanal will be most attractive to potential nucleophiles.

I would initiate a class discussion by putting students in a group of four each. Each group will have a copy of the article to read. As each group read the article, they will have a set of questions to answer. After going over the questions, I would split the classroom in half.
