Essay On Audiology Career

Extra Credit The field of audiology has a high population of older adults. As a Communication Disorders major, Audiology is one of the career options one could choose to follow. I have been debating the option of becoming an Audiologist and this is why I chose to interview my audiology professor. Dr. Grijalva graduated with her Audiology doctorate three years ago, which means she is up to date with the current procedures to become an Audiologist. To become an audiologist you need to first get your bachelor’s degree, which does not need to be in communication disorders but it is suggested since the prerequisites for the Audiology doctorate’s program are usually covered when one earns a bachelor in communication disorders. According to Dr. Grijalva, a lot of her patients seem to go in because they cannot hear well and it’s all due to occlusion of the middle ear because of ear wax. Although it sounds like an easy fix, I do not know if I would be comfortable with the sight of an ear canal full of cerumen and cu tip fibers. Her suggestion for this problem is to tell her patients not to use cu tips to clean their ears since they actually do the opposite of that, they only help push back the cerumen instead of cleaning it out. Talking to Dr. Grijalva helped me understand all the hard work it goes into having your own practice. Being your own boss sounds very achieving as well as stressful. This help me realize that if I plan on having my own practice, in whatever field, taking business classes would benefit me greatly. Dr. Grijalva also talked about her volunteer work she does once a month at a non-profit clinic in Baja California, Mexico. This I found to be a very rewarding experience and it encouraged me to want to do the same once I gain professional knowledge in my field of choice.
