Drug legalization has been considered one of the most complex social issues in the U.S. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there was an estimated 9.2% of the American population using illicit drugs, which means an increase from the 8.3% in 2002 (NIDA). Drug consumption and its effects is related to crime, public health, terrorism, and economic issues according to Romero, the Brazil bureau chief for The New York Times. The drug trade in these countries have contributed to social ailments such as the deterioration of human relationships, family disintegration, grade school dropout and an endless list of violence victims.
