There are rarely specific sections online for different, specific foot types and obviously by browsing through many different styles and types of shoes on the internet we can’t physically try them on, therefore we can’t determine if the shoe has the right shape, size and support for us but the majority of online buyers – mostly women - will keep and wear the shoe despite its possible discomfort, because it looks good! But wouldn’t a comfortable, properly fitted shoe look better than an ingrown nail or a bunion? Other reasons can be, someone candidly does not have the money for new shoes after they have outgrown their current ones or have found discomfort in their shoes, or they buy shoes in a few sizes bigger than their actual shoe size and stuff them with cheap, scrunched up material, wearing an extra layer or two of socks, stuff the toe with toilet or kitchen roll or use an insole until they can fit into them to expand their usage which has a list of health concerns, or it could be having to conform to a specific shoe type for work or school …show more content…
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth carried out an experiment to further emphasise how femininity is accentuated through wearing high heels, they conducted an experiment where they filmed two short clips of a woman walking on a treadmill once with heels and once without, however the face and torso of the woman was obscured so that the viewer could only see the outline of someone walking. After the two clips were shown to a group of students it was twice as likely for the woman not wearing heels to be mistaken as a man. However, despite heels being a supposed benefit for women in actual fact, in the workplace it is 7.5 times more likely that a woman will suffer from foot, or foot related pain than a man due to their shoes, resulting in over 44 million work days lost due to back or foot pain. So if heels are so damaging to woman’s physical condition then why are the still deemed to be the social norm? The difference made to a woman’s appearance when wearing heeled shoes does not accentuate her femininity, it really only creates an unrealistic, social ideal
