Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were both adventurous men. Hillary was a beekeeper but had climbed many mountains in his spare time. Norgay was a Sherpa that lead others on climbs and lived in Nepal. Norgay had tried to climb Mount Everest before but was never successful. Hillary knew that he was not going to let anything stop him and Norgay from reaching the top of the mountain. They set out to accomplish their goal that many work their whole lives to complete. They did not know the many challenges they would face during their trip up the mountain.

Climbers would take supplies, such as oxygen tanks and tents, with them during their trek but would leave it on their way back down to reduce the weight that they had to carry. By mid-2013, nearly 4,000 climbers had made it tot he summit of Everest and this left a huge amount of waste. Overtime the garbage and human waste became harder to remove because the cold and frozen conditions kept it frozen in place.
