Pros And Cons Of Harrison Bergeron

Improved Essays
The constitution states that all men are created equal, and that there are certain rights that cannot be taken away such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also, if there was anything or any law standing in the way of a person’s life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness we the people have the right to abolish such things. Well in Harrison Bergeron all men were not created equal to a certain extent, but they were made equal. In the year 2081 all men, women, and children were equal in every way, shape, form, and fashion. They did not bring the ones that were intellectually disabled up or help them become sharp-witted. They only brought the ones that were clever down to a level where they could no longer be independent thinkers.

In times of injustice, a nation must accept the necessity of change and embrace new ideas that will create justice in the system. For the United States, some of these changes have occurred through the process of amending our Constitution to match the changing times. In 1789 it was the rights of the people, in 1865 it was the abolishing of slavery, and in 1920 it was giving women the right to vote. However, those ideas did not stop there. For example, abolishing slavery was not the end of the fight for the rights of African Americans, and a Bill of Rights did not stop the people from arguing for more rights, such as same sex marriage.…

What is it like to live with constant restraint and no higher knowledge? Those in Anthem and “Harrison Bergeron” could tell the experience. In both pieces, everyone in the society is considered “equal” ;however, the governments in both dystopias only make it seem that way when, in reality, equality is not achieved in the way they hoped. The novella Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is similar to “Harrison Bergeron”, by Kurt Vonnegut, because both stories evince complacency to laws, evince opposition to rules against knowledge, and evince suppression to knowledge so no one is smarter than their peers or authority. “Harrison Bergeron” shows a similarity to Anthem through being complacent and smug towards laws that their societies are forced to follow.…

Disability and the justification of inequality in American History by Douglas C. Baynton The main idea addressed by Douglas C. Baynton is that disability has never been a focused upon and its is often overlooked and used as a justification for inequality in American History. Disability is ignored and not questioned or treated as a cultural construct. It is viewed as personal tragedy, instead of something that produces social hierarchies. The author goes on to describe how disability functions to justify inequality for disabled persons, as well as for women and other minority groups.…

Differences on how the individual affects society The stories “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin are different in their use of theme, setting and imagery which helps describe different ways that people view how the individual affects society. “Harrison Bergeron” is set in the future, and everyone has been handicapped to become equal, no one is smarter, stronger, or more beautiful than anyone else. In some ways, the Constitution may have taken strides for these freedoms, but most of them were not put into place for decades and some even centuries. For all men to be created equal, means that all citizens have the same opportunity. It means that all citizens get the right to vote. And it means that all citizens live with the same standing, whether that be social or political. The United States back then was the complete opposite of equal.…

When Lincoln states that the American nation was “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” his assertion is partially true. During Thomas Jefferson’s time when he first coined the statement that “all men are created equal,” it only concerned the people who were primarily involved in decision making for the nation: men (or land owning men to be more precise). Women, slaves, and even Indians did not participate in government, and served more of a supporting role in the nation. Due to their lower roles, they were deemed as unimportant. Thus, when both Jefferson and Lincoln address that “men are created equal,” that statement was correct because “men” were found to be on equal footing.…

Everyone is different, from looks, attitude, athleticism, and so much more. Each human has their own ups and downs, and each person works to improve themselves. In Kurt Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron, individuality is seen as harmful, something that encourages jealousy and low self-worth in others. However, individuality is needed to move society forward: through personal achievements and talent society will improve as a whole.…

The Declaration of independence contained the phrase “all men are created equal”, which was written by Thomas Jefferson. As a reader the phrase “all men are created equal” means that all men no matter of color, social position, wealthy, financials status, and culture are all created equal to one another. That all men abide and follow the same law and that all men have the same rights as citizen. It also means that humans are naturally free to make their own choices. On the other hand, the phrase to the founders of the republic meant that all men are created equal under the authority of God.…
