Is Greater Gun Control a Good Idea?
270 to 310 million people in the U.S. own at least one gun. Currently in the United States each state has different and minimal gun control laws. In order to own a registered gun in California you must not ever have been convicted of a crime or have a mental illness. It is clear with all of our fun related crimes we need greater gun control. To begin, greater gun control laws would lower the amount of gun related deaths. First, the U.S. has the highest number of gun related deaths, compared to countries with gun control. To explain, let’s use Australia as an example. Australia’s gun-caused homicide rates dropped by 41 percent since that increased their gun control laws. Australia has not had a mass shooting since 1996 when greater gun control was put into place. Additionally, without easy access to a firearm mass murders would be much harder to commit. Automatic guns make mass shootings wash and extremely deadly. Weapons that could be used to commit mass murders other than guns, would be much easier to stop than a gun. It might seem that guns aren’t harmful. To explain, people argue the person handling the gun is at fault for the harm not the gun itself. While it is true someone must pull the trigger on a gun in order to cause harm, you are 42-72 percent more likely to be involved in a violent crime when you own a gun. Just by owning a gun your chances for being harmed increased significantly. Guns can be harmful even when they’re not being handled. If a fire breaks out in a home containing a gun or ammunition, the fire would ignite the gunpowder causing the gun to fire. Guns are
