This year, I’ve read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Most Dangerous Game, Station Eleven, Harrison Bergeron, and 1984. All of these stories show many of my beliefs, but 1984 best shows them. 1984 best shows my beliefs because of its warnings about surveillance and power-hungriness. George Orwell wrote 1984 to warn the world about dangers he foresaw. One warning expressed through 1984 is the use of devices called “telescreens” to keep track of everyone’s actions.…
On September 11, 2001 the US World Trade Center was under attack from terrorists associated with the Islamic extremist group, al-Qaeda. The Twin Towers were barraged by two planes, one for each building. Meanwhile another plane targeted the Pentagon, and the last one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. 3,000 people died in this event. This attack triggered major U.S. initiative to fight terrorism.…
With today’s technology, there is a rift between technology and personal privacy. Currently, no precise federal law prohibits surveillance cameras, but there is a fear with common-law confidentiality rights, which frequently leads to an evaluation of a person's "reasonable expectation of privacy. " Expectation of privacy is not an issue when overt cameras are used. A person’s expectation of privacy is also not void when on public campuses, such as Grand Valley. Surveillance cameras in public locations such as sidewalks or parking lots are no problem because there is not an expectation of privacy in such areas.…
The problem isn't surveillance -- it's surveillance without adequate oversight and targeting. National security could be preserved by a program, which also respects our civil rights.…
A good video surveillance system will act as a criminal deterrent. It will alert you someone tries to intrude on your property. It protects you when you are home. It is a way to capture evidence in case someone commits a criminal act. Those are all solid reasons to get a video security system.…
The USA Patriot Act was passed just a short six weeks after the 9/11 attacks which revealed great haste and secrecy among the federal laws. The act has riddled with flaws and has greatly compromised out fundamental freedoms. According to the Virginia Bill of Rights Coalition, they feel that “the Act may constitute a greater danger for America;” but what does that mean for our future? The USA Patriot Act was passed in 2001 after the 9/11 bombing attacks of the Twin Towers and was mainly focused for the “foreign nationals” in the U.S.…
The Patriot Act was instated in 2002 after the tragic 9/11 event. Times have changed and so have the objectives of the Patriot Act. The government should not have the power of surveillance because it is not being used as intended and gives the US a bad reputation. The government should not have the power of surveillance because it is not being used as intended.…
NSA warrantless surveillance controversy Introduction The NSA warrantless surveillance controversy concerns with the surveillance of people within the United States. It all started while the collection of allegedly foreign intelligence by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) was going on as part of the war on terror. Several benefits of FISA have over years been witnessed. Since its enactment, FISA has been an important tool in the fight against intelligence collection by foreign powers or its agents with an aim of exploiting the underlying US government policies or even to establish its future strategies illegally. The USA Patriot Act has seen FISA expand its strategies in exposition of foreign terrorist groups and combating them in good time. This has seen the US government win the war against terrorism and extremism. The Act has also see reduction of purported threats and acts of terrorism to national security.…
In this paper I will be talking about the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism, also known as the USA PATRIOT ACT, how it protects the American people and allows law enforcement to protect us, as well as the event which led to the bill being passed and the impact and controversy it has on the American people. I both approve and disapprove of the PATRIOT ACT because although the bill was passed in order to protect us with good intentions. It has many gray areas which depending how the government interprets the bill can be seen in the eyes of the American people as invasive, though it has many good ideas and with reforms and debates about the bill it can actually allow for…
Police body cameras In the recent years there was growing tension between pole and the community they serve. Police use of force became a national concern throughout the nation, and also there were a number of protests against the police brutality. As a result, many activist groups was formed mostly from the people of colure requesting reforms in the law enforcement departments. A good example is the Black lives matter movement which was formed after the death of Michael Brown who was gunned down by a police officer, and other shootings that followed after Brown.…
The government can use traffic cameras, satellites, or even our own smartphones or laptop webcams to monitor us. The government is probably collecting information about each individual and keeping a record of each person. This seems rather unethical of the government. Considering this is to prevent terrorism, it would make people feel that their sense of privacy is being…
Without these two Acts in place today in our country who knows what our privacy would be like when it comes to gaining access to records. These two Acts almost contradict one another because for The Freedom of Information Act it allows a much easier access to government information in executive branch agency records. This Act also goes beyond that and will give one permission to get access to veteran’s military information of veterans who were deceased on duty. The Privacy Act then makes it harder for an individual to obtain someone’s personal privacy records. This Act protects your privacy which can be great under certain circumstances.…
Most critics of surveillance argue about how it is an abuse of power, a violation of people 's privacy, and most importantly, unconstitutional, while proponents of surveillance claim the benefit of surveillance is a reduction in the probability of high-cost events such as terrorism. Government surveillance programs, when conducted in controlled situations and closely audited by independent organizations, do not directly harm innocent civilians, especially when they benefit the safety of the general public. Surveillance, by definition, is the act of carefully watching someone or something especially in order to prevent or detect a crime. If that definition was used when discussing the issue of government surveillance, most public safety activities,…
Surveillance has presented numerous challenges to the right of privacy. There is a need to develop a high technology surveillance system that will come with great benefits without intrusion. With new advances in technology each day, it is becoming easier to communicate with each other. Yet with all these new forms of communication there have been unpleasant side effects, since this new advanced technology is not only for harmless interactions between one another it is also used to plot against governments and countries. Governments have found themselves under attack a countless number of times and have had no other choice but to resort to monitoring their citizen’s online and phone activities.…
