The CRS believes that the foods individuals consume on a daily basis are the cause behind cancer. Foods, such as Genetically Modified Organisms – defined as “organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination,” are beginning to be found everywhere in our food supply. Disturbingly, food packaging companies fail to make the public aware about Genetically Modified Organisms as they do not make it evident in the nutritional facts. Approximately ninety percent of the corn and soy we consume are genetically modified. Therefore, the CRS suggests that individuals should consume foods with GMO-free labels or consume organic foods. Additionally, researchers are debating on whether soda and carbonated beverages develop cancer as they are filled with high-fructose corn syrup, dyes, and various other harmful chemicals. Furthermore, salted, pickled, and smoked foods are nutritional items that researchers suggest develop cancer. These foods happen to hold onto chemical additions, which extend an item's shelf life. Nitrates, for example, become extremely dangerous when the foods are heated at a high temperature. The chemicals added to the foods can damage the body at a very cellular level and result in the development of cancer. In addition, refined sugars, also known as high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are perceived to be the largest cancer causing food thus far. Refined sugars feed cancer cells as the sugars are a source of insulin uptake. Also, oncologists are starting to use medications that are prescribed to diabetics as a source to fight cancer cells; thus indicating that cancer cells feed on sugar. Lastly, microwaveable popcorn is stored in chemically-lined bags, and both the bag and the popcorn induce lung cancer.
