Gap Year: Should we accept or decline the offer?
Over the past couple of years there has been quite a debate on whether or not graduating high school students should take a gap year before attending college. Recently in the headlines Malia Obama, Barack Obama 's Daughter, announced that she will be taking a gap year and then following her gap year will be attending the very prestigious Harvard University. This is causing a big frenzy in the media because Malia Obama is one of the most influential people in the world right now and serves as a role model for many of the teenagers in the united states. Even though a smart educated person like Malia Obama chooses to take a gap year, many people still disagree with her decision because they believe that during the gap year the student may be engaged in many non productive activities, lose their academic work ethic, and settle for a minimum wage job. But I maintain my position that gap years are good for you primarily for three main reasons. First, I believe that gap years are good to take because it gives you time to find out what you actually

Author of research paper Karen walker Rough draft Did you know that year round schools have a 2% dropout rate nearly three percent lower than schools without the year round program. More schools should make the change to the year round program and join the 3081 schools and 46 states currently employing the year round program. Opponents of the year round school argue that student need a long summer break to catch up on lost sleep, and lose stress. By employing the year round school program schools will provide students with short breaks spread out throughout the year decreasing student teacher burnout, eliminate the summer learning slide further reducing time spent reviewing, and increase the amount of new material learned which in turn increases test scores as well as enrichment and therefore, US schools should rely on the year round program to further boost the education of Americas schoolers. I would appeal to ethos to try to persuade my skeptical parents that a gap year will be beneficial by having a parent of a person who had taken a gap year speak to my parents about any concerns that they may have about me taking a year off. Also, I would arrange a meeting with my high school principal so that my parents can talk to a school official and ask any questions they may have. I would appeal to logos to try to persuade my skeptical parents that a gap year will be beneficial by showing them the results of students who passed their classes that took a gap year compared to students who did not take a gap year. Also, I would make a chart or graph with statistics that show taking a gap year is beneficial for me. I would appeal to pathos…

Despite the new outburst of year-round schooling across the nation, I have the firm belief that we should retain the traditional system. Most schools who have switched to the year round calendar switched back to the traditional one because the anticipated instructional advantages haven’t materialized. In some cases, it even results in a drop of one to two percentile points in national rank for reading, math, and language scores, compared to a traditional calendar. It is not a good idea to keep making this change.…

If school is all year round there will be drastic changes in the american lifestyle. For example school being all year round would be a problem for children because year round school will not give students enough family time. This is the case because sometimes parents like to take a vacation, or a break once in awhile. Therefore the government should let schools have a break during the school year so that children can have time to spend with family and friends. There are many more problems such as parents would have to make scheduling adjustments, and year round school won’t give students enough time to spend with family and friends, and year round school would cost more money.…

In an effort to persuade my skeptical parents that a “gap year” between high school graduation and college would be beneficial, establishing ethos would be imperative. In order to do this I would present myself as mature, use sophisticated vocabulary, and make certain that I am prepared to speak knowledgably about the subject and provide reasons as to why this gap year would be beneficial. If establishing ethos was not enough to persuade my parents, I would attempt to appeal to logos and pathos. I would provide statistics on students who had taken a gap year and their academic performance to appeal to logos. I would also provide examples of students who had taken gap years that my parents know personally.…

School has traditionally always had summer vacation, it has had summer vacation since the late 1800s, thought to be for agrarian reason has now been debunked for years, and yet nothing has changed. Not only has the agrarian excuse been debunked, but it proves how outdated the idea of a summer vacation is, and has been a struggling time for struggling families. To help academically and economically the school day should be shortened, but the academic year should be extended to year round schooling to make up for the time that is lost in doing nothing. The real reason why summer vacation exists, although true that in the agrarian calendar there would be a time for work in the summer, most of it was during spring.…

    Gap Year Research Paper

My view that Americans should embrace the gap year is no different. Although the vast majority of research papers I have come across when writing this paper have been in favor of the gap year, I did find one research paper that suggested that taking the time off does have a negative impact on degree completion. Dr. Phillip Parker, an award winning educational psychologist from the Australian Catholic University in Sydney concluded that “there is little evidence that individuals who took a gap-year would, on average, have had significantly different outcomes had they attempted to enter university directly after high school” (Parker). The issue with Parker’s paper is that its limitations completely discredit its findings. For example the “Finnish study found no difference in growth in goal commitment, effort, expectations of attainment and strain, or in actual university enrollment in those planning to enter university directly versus those who plan to take a gap-year.”…

Not all students can deal with intense work that requires a copious amount of time and energy throughout the year. Having a gap year allows students to also do other activities without being worried about taking a test or completing a book report the next day. Taking a year off is also a perfect opportunity to explore the world and meet new friends, especially if it involves with a career that the student is interested in. Internships will be provided for a wide variety of career positions and becoming an intern would help understand what really goes on when performing the job. For people who disagree, a person would mention that some students might abuse that year of opportunity and use the gap year as a vacation.…
