With the population of livestock growing GMOs will become an even more valuable asset. Over 70% of GMOs that are grown are fed to food producing animals such as chickens, cattle, sheep, and goats. GMOs can help the animal to “more effectively use nutrients present in feed” (Biotechnology FAQs). Before GMOs can be fed to these animals the crop itself has to go through a substantial amount of safety evaluation. After the crops are tested for safety then they test for the effects on animals using rodents. They have to complete a 90 day evaluation before deemed safe for food producing animals. Extensive studies have been done in regard to the safety of GMOs in food producing animals. “Both regulatory studies and independent peer-reviewed studies have shown that GE crops can be safely used in animal feed, and rDNA fragments have never been detected in products (e.g. milk, meat, eggs) derived from animals that consumed GE feed” (Van Eenennaam, 2013). Each crop must grow through these procedures before they are released commercially. Each test cost millions of dollars. “A recent two-year rat feeding study involving 200 rats was purported to cost four million US dollars” (Van Eenennaam, 2013).
Not only can GMOs provide people with more food, they can actually save plants from diseases. In one specific instance they saved the Hawaiian papaya industry. “The papaya ringspot virus …show more content…
A bill passed in 2016 that “requires food manufacturers to use one of three types of labels to inform consumers when GMO ingredients are in their products: a statement on the package, directions to a website or a phone number, or a QR code” (Purdue University). Non-GMO food on the other hand is almost always clearly labeled. Also, GMOs have to go through extensive testing before they are approved to be sold commercially. People have a right to know what they are putting into their body, so if they are concerned about each ingredient and how it is created, then they have every right to find that out. If a person wanted to know if a certain brand used GMOs to create it they can call that brands headquarters and find out exactly if they do or not. GMOs present no harm to humans and or the environment. Over the years hundreds of scientist have proven this to be true. Biotechnology companies pay for numerous studies to prove to the public that GMOs pose no risk to them, animals, or the
