As Stewart Dunlop, writer of “What Makes a Good Documentary?” Said, “the essential element of a good documentary is simple, the story.” What makes a worthy story and how do we gather it? It all starts with the art of persuasion, done by appealing to logos, ethos, and pathos. The first component is logos where the creator makes a claim or argument that is later proven using evidence like action or still shots that are credible and reveal the truth.…

The creation and introduction of the Bering Land Bridge hypothesis provided Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples with an explanation for how the peopling of North America came to occur that is separate from traditional Indigenous origin stories. However, it is key to note that, as with any hypothesis, there are academics who agree and disagree with the idea that people migrated from Asia to North America along the Bering land bridge (McIlwraith, 2016). The book by Dan O’Neill entitled The Last Giant of Bering (2004) claims to confirm the existence of the land bridge, whereas the article in the September issue of Nature entitled “Postglacial viability and colonization in North America’s ice-free corridor” (2016) claims the opposite. I would like to examine Taylor Clark’s essay on Nervous Nellies or better yet her approach to explaining why women seem to be more anxious about life than mean. I believe the author did a great job in combining all three of the types of reasoning. She utilized the pathos style in appealing to our emotions by helping us actually take emotion out of the equation of why females react nervously when it comes to challenges. She showed us her authority on the subject by citing her book called Nerve.…

It is not possible to write an effective essay about animal experimentation without having to resort to an emotional appeal. Though Heloisa Sabin and Jane Goodall could have avoided the use of pathos in their respective pieces, “Animal Research Saves Lives” and “A Question of Ethics,” they choose not to because they understood, to some degree, the rhetorical triangle and its role in formulating effective arguments. The term “rhetorical triangle” makes it evident that ethos, logos and pathos are all related and a well-formed argument consists of all three in near equal proportion. Like legs of a triangle, each type of appeal supports the other two types. Sabin and Goodall both used emotional appeal in their writing to some extent.…

Shane Koyczan later created a short film and spoke in a Ted talk to express his poem orally. The author uses the rhetorical appeal Pathos throughout the poem to persuade his readers and viewers the importance of not brushing bullying off as something minor, to realize that each and every one of us has a purpose no matter how insignificant others make us feel, and how words can be extremely detrimental and scaring to a person.
