Genetics has typically been view as a benefit to society in the aspect of eugenics. Eugenics is defined by Francis Galton as “the study of agencies under social control that improves or impairs the qualities of future generations either physically or mentally”. The statement “improves or impairs” directly correlates to positive and negative eugenics. In the past positive eugenics has been seen through Better Baby and Fitter Familie for Future Fireside contests. These contests were used to endorse breeding with the sole purpose of choosing the most favorable traits to be passed onto the next generation. In the criminal justice system, men and women continue to be sterilized without having full knowledge or giving consent to the procedure. In California, 148 women inmates were sterilized between 2006 and 2010. It wasn’t until 2014 that a law was made stating the sterilization couldn’t occur unless for medical emergencies within prisons. The current US administration ran on a campaign that promised increased immigration restriction and deportation. And a majority of marriages continue to be within the same race, though this is slowly diversifying. Both positive and negative eugenics has been used by employers, the government, and even as society as a whole to enforce policies that benefit themselves. Employers have had the ability to refuse employment and to discriminate against potential employees based on their genes and genetic traits that they are predisposed to, such as medical conditions. And as stated earlier both the public and the government endorsed and put into power an individual that supports the deportation of individuals and the prevention of allowing groups of people from entering the
