When a toxic, non-biocompatible pollutant is treated, the electrochemical conversion transforms the organic substrate into a variety of metabolites; often, biocompatible organics are generated, and biological treatment is still required after the electrochemical oxidation. In contrast, electrochemical degradation yields water and CO2, no further purification being necessary.
