Pros And Cons Of Elderly Driving

Firstly, elderly people still have the need to drive. There are many places that need a car to get to, such as hospitals, grocery stores, and entertainment facilities. Most older people have to visit hospitals much more due to health issues that arise because of their age, but some elderly people might not have anybody they can depend on to drive them around. Banning elderly people from driving their own vehicles can deny them access to multiple different opportunities and necessities. In addition, some mental issues can also appear when older people aren’t able to drive anymore: "After years of advising others on how to get older drivers to relinquish the car keys, which often resulted in lost independence, isolation and depression (as well as family disputes)" (Brody). This can cause problems within the family and end up making the rest of the senior’s life horrendous and tragic. Besides, elderly people aren’t necessarily awful drivers. "When a crash occurs involving an older driver, it tends to garner media attention, whereas the same accident with a younger driver would not" (Brody). This causes more people to focus on the fact that older people do get into accidents. Moreover, this can sometimes make people over-exaggerate and believe that the elderly drivers are at fault for the majority of crashes even though the riskiest drivers are young men. In reality, elderly people tend to stop driving when they realize that they might pose a threat on the roads. It is also unfair to restrict all elderly people from driving. In fact, most of them are safe drivers and haven’t gotten into any trouble when dealing with their driving style, but some people might still feel wary about elderly people driving on the roads.
