Pete Rozelle saw a possibility for higher ratings, by airing at least one Primetime game during the week, in the past the NFL tried to air on Friday nights, but critics said it would take away audiences from High School football games. That is when Pete Rozelle decided to experiment with a Monday night game in 1964 with an untelevised game between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions, which drew the largest audience attendance in Detroit at the time. According to Lewis (1998), “He invented (with ABC Sports chief Roone Arledge) Monday Night Football, which is the second longest running prime-time show on American television, after 60 Minutes” (p. 1).Although Rozelle experimented with Monday Night Football 1964, it did not take off until…
Throughout the 2015 NFL season, fans were frequently advised that a player was entering the “concussion protocol” and would need to be “cleared” before returning to play. Based on the observations of the sideline staff and a spotter located in the press box above the field, players will be evaluated on the sideline and removed from play if a concussion was suspected. If confirmed, players then enter the concussion protocol. It’s been estimated that close to 200 concussions were suffered by NFL players this past season, and in some of those cases the NFL concussion protocol missed its mark. One of those cases involved the failure of sideline staff to remove Rams quarterback Case Keenum from the game after his head was slammed to the ground…
An incentive-based program for injuring players does not belong in the NFL. It is bad for the brand and bad for the people who play the game, which is far bigger than one coach or one team or one season (Darlington, 2012, pg. 1). Through the scandal there were many suspensions and penalties that were put in place to reprimand the franchise for its actions. Head Coach Sean Payton received a one-year suspension while General Manager Mickey Loomis was only suspended for eight games. Assistant Head Coach Joe Witt received a six game suspension and Defensive Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely from the team.…
Did you know that Vernon Davis of the Redskins, who had just scored a Touchdown, was penalized when he mimicked a basketball player and shot the Football through the uprights of a Goal Post against the Eagles.
