The US National Library of Medicine, run by the NIH, published an extensive article titled “Direct-to-Consumer Pharmaceutical Advertising- Therapeutic or Toxic.” It provides an overview of what direct-to-consumer advertising entails, its history, and an extensive list of arguments for and against their legalization. At the end of the article, they conclude that both supporters and opponents of these advertisements should seek some changes in the interest of patient care. They do not specifically advocate for a blanket ban, although they mention that the United States and New Zealand are they only countries that allow direct-to-consumer advertisement that includes product claim ads.
