Digital technology has become an integrated part of everyday life. With 88% of Americans accessing the internet on a daily basis, it is hard to remember a time when going online was not a commonplace event. The majority of teenagers of the 21st century will never know what it was like to not have instant information or connections at their fingertips. Teens are using digital media to connect with their world through music, images, and video. They are not only the early adopters of new media platforms, they are also responsible for creating new online content. To be an effective youth services librarian in a modern library, it is crucial to understand how teens are using digital technology in order to meet their information needs. It allows teens to stay in contact with their friends and family member by sharing photos of their life, and posting information on their school events. Some teens use social media to share their art, whether it be traditional, digital or musical, there is a website that allows kids to connect and learn from each other. A poll conducted by Stage of Life found that 49% of all teens say they have uploaded videos they have created to YouTube. Sharing their creativity and the positive feedback that can come from it could help the adolescent develop that sense of uniqueness and independence they will carry into adulthood. Alternately, internet “trolls”, or bullies often frequent these sites. A majority of teens are still developing a sense of self-worth, and simply do not have the maturity or the self-esteem to ignore the harsh words posted to their social media sites. Even worse, there are numerous cases of other teenagers using social media to harass their peers to the point that they inflict serious mental damage, leading to the teen taking their own life
