Decriminalizing drugs has been a huge controversy in the United States when it comes to reforming current drug laws. Organizations such as The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse make it obvious they are completely against the decriminalization of drugs. In the article Should drugs be decriminalized? No. by Califano, they demonstrate exactly so. Every form of persuasion consists of at least one literary tool, ethos, pathos or logos. Since Califano’s article is a solely a one-sided argument identifying and analyzing the use of ethos, pathos and logos is rather obvious. Having strong ethos is crucial to having a strong argument in this situation. The absence of ethos impacts Califano’s article in a very negative way. When Califano does use studies, they have nothing in common with his main argument that drugs shouldn’t be decriminalized. For example, Califano goes on to talk about how “In 2005, the government extended the hours of operation for pubs. Rather than curbing binge drinking, the result has been a sharp increase in crime between 3 am and 6 am, in violent crimes in certain pubs and in emergency treatment for alcohol misusers” (2007). It is unclear what type of message or argument is trying to be conveyed here. Califano does not even explain how or why this information could be helpful as it seems as if it has no correlation to decriminalizing all drugs in the United States. Even today in 2018, many articles fail to cite sources and you find them constantly using logical appeals and fallacies over and over again try to persuade their audience when they have no real evidence on which side might be better or worse. The article did do a few things well. Pathos and logos were used effectively a few times but it barley made a difference in the long run. The article was very professional, no spelling errors, easy to read and well organized for the most part. It would be nice to see Califano write this article with the information he has today if he would do anything different and focus more on establishing a well sense of credibility to flow throughout the article or not.
