Can Cosmetic Testing be 100% Cruelty Free?
Imagine this, your household pet such as a dog, rabbit, guinea pig, etc being put through horrific tests that are designed solely to inflict pain and determine how much damage one product is capable of. What you just imagined is not merely a figure of your imagination, but the harsh reality of cosmetic animal testing. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories to determine the level of toxicity, irritancy, and overall lethalness a cosmetic contains before entering the market. Would you be okay with your beloved pet being tortured all for a tube of mascara or deodorant? It is time for us to abolish the use of animals for testing cosmetic products completely, and turn to the alternative methods that are more accurate, inexpensive and completely cruelty free.
When analyzing cosmetic testing in general, one must understand the definition of a cosmetic product- any

The FDA does not have an actual requirement that products must be tested before they enter the market, they can only take action if a company product receives negative attention. The U.S. currently has no restrictions on any form of animal testing, unlike Europe who recently banned all use of animal testing. When a product states that they are 100 percent cruelty free, do not be fooled, many companies will false advertise to promote the sales of their product. The only thing a cosmetic company must have on their product is a list of ingredients (Keville). Testing on animals for drug related purposes vs. cosmetic testing are complete opposites. When a new drug wants to enter the market they must test their product thoroughly, standard protocol is on animals, and then the FDA will give them the go ahead. Their purpose is to create a drug to better off mankind, whereas cosmetics is a much less significant use of testing on animals that can be avoided all

Makeup industries such Revlon and other types of industries had discontinued animal testing simply because it doesn’t work anymore. “The food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trial because they don’t work or are dangerous”, claims Noah Berlatsky in his document, Animal Testing is Bad Science. Yet, the biggest reason for the discontinuation is advances in technology. “In 2009, industry trade group Cosmetics Europe, along with a division of the European Commission on Research & Innovation, launched a $68-million research initiative to develop lab technologies and computational models capable of predicting the toxicity of chemicals in humans” says Gregory Mone in his article, New Models in Cosmetics Replacing Animal Testing. Nowadays, this gives industries a better advantage in decision to invest their money into better accuracy rather than failed…

According to Troy Seidle a pole concluded that, “88 percent of us believe animal testing causes pain and suffering to animals and that such suffering just for cosmetics isn’t worth it, especially when safe ingredients are already available,”(Seidle). Considering that most people don’t feel the need to buy products with newly tested ingredients, why should companies continue to do that it is not an absolutely necessary practice. There are thousands of chemicals out there that have already gone through the process of being tested so it wouldn’t be like companies couldn’t make new products, they could make many. Yes companies want to make money by selling newly improved products but that is not going to make people want to buy products that aren’t apart of their daily use. Gregory Mone states that animal testing is a long and expensive process and can take several years and use up millions of dollars to carry out, (Mone).…

Cosmetic companies should be banned from testing their products on animals because it is inhumane and an unreliable method of testing cosmetics. With moisturizing face masks and luscious lip glosses on the rise, it may be tempting to buy from well-known cosmetic companies, but most of these brands hide cruel and inhumane secrets about how they test their products. For instance, the U.S. Animal Welfare Act, which regulates animal testing, allows cosmetic companies to electrocute, burn,…

Besides, "Cosmetic testing on live animals is an outdated, inaccurate and cruel method of determining products' safety for human use" (Fact Sheet: Cosmetic Testing). If we have to test most of these products on animals, there might be a problem. Maybe we should take a second to think about the danger that we are putting these animals in. By not in this day and age we should know what chemicals people can work with and what chemicals we cannot. We have enough cosmetic products and brands, it is not necessary for cosmetic researchers to go on and test on animals. Animals should have similar rights as people, and we need to learn to share our planet with them.…
