Pros And Cons Of Computer-Automated Driving

Decent Essays
Having read both the PRO and CON article, I have concluded that the PRO article makes a weaker argument. To make the article stronger, the PRO author needs to strengthen his point on the safety of having a computer-automated driver as opposed to a human driver. He should mention how reckless and careless some drivers are on the road, whether it be texting/talking on a cell phone or driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana. The author could add the statistics of the amount of people that die or get seriously injured every year by drivers driving recklessly, and point out that number could drop significantly with computer-automated drivers. The author could also mention that people would able to safely work/sleep/etc. while riding

Luckily, Thomas Frey writes a two-page quasi-extension to Alessandri’s article, Frey’s being entitled “Hi, I’m a Robot and I’m Here to Take Your Job.” Be sure not judge this book by its cover, Frey might surprise you. Like Alessandri, Frey agrees that human workers will no longer be needed as drivers in the transportation industry after autonomous vehicles begin to popularize. Frey states that “Driverless cars [...] will replace the need for drivers,” and an extension to Alessandri’s claim, adds on by explaining, “there is never a 100% replacement rate” (Frey).…

When you add in technology like phones, radios, and even other people, it makes driving even more dangerous. There are hundreds of car crashes a day. Any way to reduce the risk from distracted driving is a positive one.…

Having read both the PRO and CON article for driverless cars, the PRO article gave weaker evidence. The PRO article was based off of what they thought people would do they did not have hard cold evidence unlike the CON article. This article would use phrases like most likely which is not a solid argument. An example of this is under Suburban Life is Preferred the sentence " Most likely they will also alter where and how people live.'' In this article the author should include a servery showing how many people who live in the suburban area would switch to a driverless car.…

In “Driverless Future”, Steven Greenhouse discusses the potential beneficial and adverse effects that self-driving cars will cause in the future. In fact, in light of Singer's paper, the 'utilitarian' actions in many recent papers on self-driving cars seem to promote a severe form of risk pooling, in which pedestrians would loose a significant disincentive to behave prudently when crossing roads. That is, if a self-driving car will sacrifice its passenger to avoid two or more pedestrians, some pedestrians, much like the gluttons, will see the chance of arriving at their destinations quicker by abandoning traffic rules, while having little risk of being injured by a vehicle. Meanwhile, passengers of self-driving cars will face the possibility of being sacrificed for someone else's impatience and thoughtlessness. Therefore, those considering self-driving cars, not to mention those who already possess one, are likely to reject such technology and revert back to conventional vehicles. Given that research (Bonnefon et al. 2016) has shown people favour self-protective algorithms for themselves, not to mention that they see the sacrifice of a family member or friend as reprehensible (Sachdeva et al. 2015), it is too great a burden to ask people to accept the cost of injury and death for them and their loved ones, when that would include scenarios involving…

Distracted driving is a serious issue in this country and numerous states don’t treat it as such. At least 9 people are killed every day due to distracted driving and almost 1,000 crashes happen because of this. Once Florida realized how severe of a problem this was becoming, they decided to ban distracted driving all together. This year, Florida created the “Put It Down” distracted driving campaign to try and influence better driving choices. While Florida is doing all they can to defeat this ongoing issue, distracted driving was not always a top priority.…

In my opinion the Con article has a weaker argument. All things she put in the article were options you are able to fix with time. She also mentioned a big problem was "Human Error". This would make the Pro's article even more strong because it would say these driver less cars are more safe than an unpredictable human. Some things I would add into this article would be some more examples of these "driver less" cars making mistakes while driving because of some unknown obstacle.…

The idea of driverless car has been worked on by major tech companies like Google and Apple since 2005. In the next four to five years’ driverless cars will be on the road if they can overcome some technological, ethical, legal, and business hurdles. Firstly, with current technological hardware and software there are not enough safety features that can guarantee the safety of the passengers and pedestrians. There is also the ethical issue of a driverless car that is programmed to prioritize saving the lives of pedestrians over the lives of passengers. There are demonstrations such as the one depicted in the article “Researchers hack into driverless car system, take control of vehicle” were driverless cars were hacked do to their reliance on wireless technology.…

Self-Driving Cars A self-driving car is when the car needs little or no human interaction. With a self-driving car instead of having to drive for long hours you can just sit back and watch some Netflix or maybe read a book while the car does the work by using GPS and censers to tell where it and the other cars are on the road. The first attempt at a self-driving car was in the 1950 's GM and RCA developed a automated highway using radio control for speed and steering. Magnets in the car followed a steel cable built in to the road and control towers had to manage all the traffic.…
