I as a counselor have to uphold the law as well as my code of ethics. I could not in good practice, allow this client to leave the premises without proper transportation. This was a tough decision for me because I genuinely felt for this particular client. He had had a…
The Board issued a Consent Order placing the license on probation until the counselor completes a 3-hour continuing education course on ethics and confidentiality. I agree with the Board decision to mandate specific training on confidentiality and no further charges. In 2017, the Arizona State Board of Behavioral Health Examiners ruled on Complaint No. 2017-0074. A counselor was charged with fraudulent actions for misrepresenting the reason for leaving or not disclosing past terminations on five employment applications.…
In the first place every family is not perfect and every marriage is not successful. Not only is it because everyone has their secrets and problems, but also because people do not always tell their secrets and problems to just anyone. To anyone they think a therapist will not solve personal problems, like affairs of course. How do therapist think of these questions? By asking simple or hard questions that can be solved by talking or arguing.…
The article “Non-Profit News: Easy Ways to Lose Clients and Your Reputation” written by Dr. Warren Corson III was about how certain things, although they may seem insignificant can affect you and your clients in a negative way. An example would be focusing on making money. When a clinician is only focused on making money their clients may feel as if they are a meal ticket. Immediately asking to have clients pay their co-payment and fill out paperwork before asking the clients why they are there, may cause a negative impact on the clients’ perception of the clinician. Corson stated that smiling, making eye contact, and asking clients why they are there is extremely important.…
Comparing Codes of Ethics The very nature of the counseling profession places professional counselors in close proximity with people, information, and influence. Due to this, ethical dilemmas can arise throughout the course of this work. To help aid in the protection of counselors, and to provide a framework for ethical practice, ethical codes have been developed and instituted within the profession. As Beuchamp and Childress stated (as cited in Calley, 2009), “in the counseling profession, ethical standards are required to protect clients, guide professional behavior, ensure the autonomy of professionals, increase the status of the profession, enhance the client 's and the community 's trust in the profession, and articulate collegial conduct between professionals,” (p. 476).…
Hey Tonquishae, I enjoyed reading your thread. I also felt the counselor should have referred his client to another counselor, especially since he felt a romantic attraction to his client’s oldest daughter. According to the American Association of Christian Counselors (2014), counselor should refer their clients when there is a possibility of a dual relationship forming (AACC 1-240). Although the counselor felt he was competent enough to continue counseling the family, it still would have been beneficial for him to refer the family. It would have helped him regroup and place his emotions in check.…
I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Pamela Dengrove. She is a clinical psychologist and specializes in forensic psychology as well. She graduated in 2012 from Widener University. The interview instead of being in person was through the phone. Dr. Dengrove was kind enough to answer my questions while she was driving, I assume to her job.…
When a counselor assumes a second relationship with a client, this can cause actual or potential conflict between the counselor’s professional duties and the help they are trying to provide their client. In fact, it could be argued that a dual relationship between a counselor and patient could potentially do more harm to the patient than good especially if the counselor is not able to be objective as a result.…
I see what you mean about how a counselor word a phrase is as important as important as what the counselor says. I agree with you, it’s not what you say, it’s how you said it. If the client is in a crisis due to a natural disaster, the counselor should not ask the client “what seems to be the issue with you today?” The counselor may be displayed as uncaring or in some other negative way.…
However, this writer understands that through reevaluating and knowing her client, she will be able to successfully work to identify what the client needs in order for termination to occur. This writer has identified that she will do her practicum at a private practice that she knows. This writer has been offered in the past to help this counselor with running groups. This writer feels that connecting with this counselor about moving forward with assisting in groups will help to prepare better for her future practicum experience. This writer feels that through doing this, she would get more experience in addition to her current position to practice the skills of empathy, probing, challenging, as well as many others and to get more comfortable in utilizing these skills hands…
If the counselor was trying to help the client to be less dependent, then the counselor was ethically obligated to discuss this with her client before suspending the session (Koocher & Keith-Spiegel, 2008). When the client called, the counselor should have answered only to remind the client of the reasoning behind the suspension. If the client was in serious distress, the counselor should have responded appropriately in order to maintain trust and prevent the client from suffering…
This will also be the time to build a good rapport with the client’s family and significant others. Building this rapport will be beneficial in assisting the client in having a positive outcome. Promoting an environment in which the client, family and significant others feel comfortable will enable the counselor to learn about all of the factors influencing the client. This process begins the groundwork for the vocational rehabilitation process, as well as, enables the counselor and client to build a relationship of mutual trust and…
