If you're expecting or have just given birth to a baby boy, you may be wondering if circumcision is a good idea or not. Some people have an easy time making the decision because their religion commands one way or the other on the issue. Outside of that, here are some pros and cons to weigh when making the decision.

What Is Circumcision?

Infant boys have a hood of skin on their penises when born. This skin is called the "foreskin". In circumcision, that foreskin is removed. Most babies have this procedure done within the first ten days of life. In the United States, between 55-65% of newborn boys are circumcised.

Cons

Those who choose not to circumcise their male babies cite the following reasons:

The procedure is painful.
Circumcision can increase the possibility of the baby developing meatitis, which is when the opening of the penis becomes inflamed.
There is a risk of complications, even if it is low.
What the Doctors Say

According to MedicineNet, doctors have taken a stance of informing parents of the pros and cons that are known and letting parents make the decision whether or not to circumcise. The American Academy of Pediatrics takes the stance that there is no medical reason for routine circumcisions. However, recent studies have shown that circumcision may reduce the transmission of some sexually tranmitted diseases such as HIV. More research has to be conducted before anything conclusive is determined.

Many lower class individuals would not even begin to think about inducing this medical procedure on their child not only due to the fact that is is morally wrong, but also including the fact that it is an expensive procedures. Many would think that the doctors would be conscious of this detriment they are putting on society, however, with the amount of money those doctors are getting in return, it is likely that they are not thinking about their moral compass. In fact, according to Author Michael Poore the only limitations on this procedure are limited to the desires of the parents and their ability to pay, the current technology, and the willingness of the clinic to obey the patient's wishes (Poore). Therefore, the only limitations given to this process are what the people involved and interested are putting on it. Those limitations are highly set on the amount of money the individual has to spend on this process.…

Another one is it also leads to body infections because as we see in the movie, the one who does the mutilation is not a doctor and does not use some kind of tools that are sterilized but what’s worst here is it can also lead to death which is what Waris’ sisters ended up as she stated at the end of the movie. It is so sad and upsetting that it is still being continued to other countries. I can’t prevent myself from feeling bad for those innocent young girls who went through this practice that died because they didn’t had the capacity to endure the pain it brought or because of the infection that this practice has caused and the pain and sadness that the death of their daughter will bring to the family. Another is that it also violates human rights since in this practice, it is often carried out without consent and is forcibly against a girl’s will and if they don’t do this practice they will not be allowed to marry someone and will be treated as a whore or dirty which is something that every woman doesn’t want and doesn’t deserve to be treated. This has made me mesmerized by Waris’ actions for she is courageous and brave to speak up to everyone for it is what she thinks is right…

While many health benefits of circumcision have been proposed, in reality these benefits are not guaranteed and are far outweighed by the risks. The case for circumcision to lowering the chances of contracting genital herpes, HIV, or cervical cancer is not entirely proven. It has however been documented that the use of a condom is more effective than counting on a circumcision for protection. An elective surgery is not a solution for safe sex, and the responsibility still falls to the parties involved.…

Sometimes pros win over the cons and other times the cons win over the pros. Concerned Parents think about this when getting their children vaccinated, but in this case the pros outweigh the cons. One pro for essential vaccination include prevention of outbreaks and the spreading of diseases.
