Every parent through their pregnancy wants a healthy baby with ten fingers and ten toes. There may be underlying wants, dad wants the football player and mom wants the ballerina. We live in a society where gender screening is now an option. The definition of a designer baby “is a baby that is the result of genetic screening or genetic modification. Embryos may be screened prior to implantation, or possibly gene therapy techniques could be used to create desired traits in a child” (Designer Baby, 2016). In addition to this, it is also heading into the direction of being able to select the gender of your child and specific physical traits. This begs the question just because we may be able to, should we? The following things should be considered: gender being abused, is it ethical, the violation of the baby’s rights, the effects that it can have on the eggs, and what if it doesn’t work.
When it comes to the decision of gender being abused. In the United States not always as much, but in other countries males are held at a higher level of respect than women. "Some believe that the whole purpose of sex selection is for family balancing,"… "Others believe that sex selection should not even be a consideration because of how it can be abused, in nations that place far greater value on the life of a male versus the life of a female" (Lehmann-Haupt, 2008).
When it comes to the moral and ethical consequences you must be aware that the cells that are not selected are discarded of or aborted. In addition, some designer babies are created for people to use the stem cells. The fetus or infants that are a result of this process are aborted or given up for adoption. Technology is not always one hundred percent, there can be errors. It is also true that “genes often have more than one uses. When you have your heart set on a blue-eyed, blonde haired child and it doesn’t work what happens. We tend to live is a world where when things are not what you want you discard them. This also goes back to the violation of a child’s
