Hello, I feel like we should stop celebrating Columbus Day as a national holiday, as he is not a historical hero. My reasons for this is that he destroyed a civilization, enslaved and terrorized Indians, and was generally ruthless to others. When Columbus got to the New World, he destroyed a society present there. He and his crew brought new diseases, such as smallpox, measles, and influenza to the New World. The Indians, who had no medical knowledge, couldn’t fight the viruses, killing off a majority of them. Once Columbus was gone, he opened up pathways for other tribes and societies, such as the Inca and the Aztecs.
