In 2012, zoologist Peter Menkhorst conducted a study to investigate the claims that large predatory cats inhabit Victoria. This was done to satisfy the many claims of large cat sightings and reports of the animals attacking and eating livestock. Menkhorst concluded that: “The most parsimonious explanation for many of the reported sightings is that they involve large, feral individuals of the Domestic Cat Felis catus. However, some evidence cannot be dismissed entirely, including preliminary DNA evidence, footprints and some behaviours that seem to be outside the known behavioural repertoire of known predators in Victoria.”…

The growing pressures of extinction for over 3,000 Australian native species are currently threatening the Australian ecosystem’s ecological balance. A major contributor to these pressures is the introduction of mesopredators such as foxes and feral cats. These species have been able to strive in the Victorian region as Australia’s native apex predators such as the dingo, have been removed or culled from the area (Milman, 2015). Therefore, with no threat of predation, no fatal disease threats and an extreme reproductive rate, these species have been able to over populate regions all over Australia. Feral animals pose a great threat to native species by predation, competition for food and shelter, destroying habitat, and by spreading diseases.…

According to National Geographic, the article “Exotic Pets”, former exotic wildlife owner, Tim Harrison claims, “(I) will never again own anything wild or exotic./ (I) believe ownership of all potentially dangerous exotic animals should be banned”. Therefore even a former owner of wolves, snakes, lions, and bears agrees that having possession of wild animals can be extremely dangerous to a person considering exotic pets can be unpredictable. Furthermore, owners of exotic pets do not realize the risk and danger they put on the community for housing these exotic creatures. In National Geographic, the article “Exotic Pets” Lauren Slater writes, “A man named Terry Thompson let 50 of his wild animals, including lions and tigers, out of their cages and enclosures before killing himself”. This quote depicts an example of a man from Ohio, who let out 50 wild animals, causing a dangerous situation for citizens living in Muskingum County.…

According to the story of Noah’s Ark, when mice and rats bred and infested the whole boat, Noah consulted the lion. The lion sneezed, and out popped two domestic cats, ready to go! While this is most likely not how the domestic cat was created, it goes to show that cats have been around as useful and companion animals for a very long time. Despite my mother’s oh-so-strong argument of “because I said so”, every house should have a cat because they hunt vermin, are easy to care for, and are beneficial to one’s health. While cats can be our cuddly companions, they are also what some may refer to as “the most important animal on the farm”.…
