Be it resolved that Capital Punishment should be enforced in The Bahamas. However, I strongly oppose this motion. In its simplest form, capital punishment is defined as; the legal authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime, in our Constitution of the Bahamas our form of punishment is still listed to this day as; death by hanging. Enforce means to compel observance of or compliance with a law, rule, or obligation with reference to The Bahamas’ form of punishment has not been enforced since David Mitchell who was hanged in Fox Hill Prison January 6, 2000.

Morals refer to an individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong. Many Christians believe that God commanded "Thou shalt not kill" Exodus 21:13, and that this is a clear instruction with no exceptions. Isn't the Bahamas supposed to be a Christian Nation? Is so my question to you the audience is; Why would we even consider enforcing capital punishment? “Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring. Capital punishment violates the right to life which happens to be the most essential of all human rights which is both morally and ethically erroneous. It likewise, disregards the right to be subjected to torment, remorseless, inhumane or corrupting punishments. “It should be clear that the death penalty does just the opposite of promoting decency and respect for life. It dehumanizes people and promotes murder. It can never be applied fairly.”– John Morrison. Moreover, capital punishment undermines human dignity which is inherent to every human being. With life being so precious nobody should ever be killed or murdered, by a person, group or nation. “When you use murder to end murder you guarantee murder will never end.” -- Richard Sherricky. “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind” were the words of the wise Mahatma Gandhi. In no where else is this more so proven than in the American criminal justice system. Some people can get prison time, fines, and even sentenced to death as a punishment for the crimes they have committed. This state sponsored death as punishment is a tactic used to frighten and intimidate people into not committing crimes, but this type of punishment goes directly against the 8th amendment right, directly prohibiting the cruel and unusual punishment, despite the generations separating their respective implementations.…

Capital punishment brings up many ethical issues. Capital punishment is seen in mainly two ways, a cure for society and an illness to society. Influential people such as Martin Luther King and Ghandi said that capital punishment adds to the negative idea that killing is a reasonable solution to crimes, while others such as Presidents Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln believe that it sets an example to criminals to avoid at least major crimes that would warrant the death penalty. Capital punishment wasn 't always seen this way, because people were desensitized to things such as punishment by death, but things have changed now that the human life is much more romanticised. However, each country has a different stance on capital punishment.…

The death penalty today is perceived by many as an inhumane way of receiving punishment. A critic will not only argue the simple fact that the death penalty is a violation of one’s constitutional rights and only targeted for a particular social group, but also intended to affect innocent people. The death penalty doesn’t have to be the way it’s perceived to be today, for if it is dealt with accordingly, the benefits will outweigh the negative and would help the United States in the foreseeing future. That being said, instead of worrying about the damage the death penalty may cause, one should take into consideration the reasoning behind maintaining and implementing new procedures that would further enforce the penalty nationwide.
