No one appreciates a staff member being dishonest, rude or unprofessional. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants have an obligation to fulfill in the workforce, especially professionalism. I believe professionalism is a person who holds themselves to a higher standard and one who obeys the code of ethical standards. Physical therapist assistants should display beliefs, values and attitudes towards staff members and clients throughout their career. These values should also be kept in our homes, religion and social life.…
The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA) establishes a security of employment for the members that protect and serve their country. This Act can be approached from a number of ways and appear both beneficial and challenging. First looking at the benefits, the act protects current and past uniformed service members to ensure that if they were called to duty that they have a place to return to. Honestly, this is the right thing to do. Their intent of serving their country and protecting those that live within the United States should be acknowledged and rewarded.…
Over the years, there had been discussions about the possibility of changing the name of the profession, “physician assistant”. Physician assistants are licensed to practice medicine with supervision by physicians (Barsukiewicz). The physician assistant’s profession has served the healthcare for more than 45 years. Healthcare is endlessly changing. The name “physician assistant” has been associated with medicine and has helped the demand of our growing healthcare system.…
Communities entrust their health and safety to paramedics when they are in their most vulnerable state, it is for that primary reason paramedics should be subjected to professional registration - to protect the public. Currently, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) is responsible for overseeing the registration requirements of health professionals within Australia (AHPRA, YEAR). AHPRA’s paramount objective is to maintain public safety by ensuring only health practitioners who are appropriately trained and qualified to practice in a competent and ethical manner are registered (Victorian Government, 2009). Of note, unlike the other health professionals, at present paramedics are not subject to any annual registration…
There are numerous paramedic specialist roles that are immensely beneficial to the community and even more so in rural areas. Specialist Roles provide and allow a for a wider range of scope of practices where patients can receive advanced care in difficult or life threatening situations. The most common specialist role that majority of paramedics aspire to become is an intensive care paramedic. An intensive care paramedic is an advanced clinical specialist of paramedicine and like every service will work with a variety of multidisciplinary teams supporting each other and achieving common goals that benefit the community. To advance from a fully qualified paramedic to an intensive care paramedic will involve an educational requirement where…
Police are on the front lines of the opiate epidemic because of their close proximity to those who overdose. As a response to the growing number of opiate/heroin overdoses, most departments carry Naloxone in the form of a nasal spray Narcan. Narcan is a fast acting antagonist that almost instantly reverses the effects of an overdose by attaching to the opioid receptors in the brain and blocking the opium from having an effect on the nervous system. It is a miracle drug that has saved countless lives yet finds itself in the middle of a law enforcement debate on whether it is the duty of all officers to carry the antagonist. Narcan typically costs $75 for a pack of two and are provided to departments by health and community organizations.…

Kathy Block is a 53 year-old Family Nurse Practitioner, certified in Wound and Ostomy Care, and employed by a private practice of an independent living community. She is a typical nurse in the sense that “most NPs choose a specialty area such as adult, family, or pediatric health care” (Black, 2014, p. 18). Also, her certification was through ANCC, the largest certification body among nurses (p. 145). Karen Paker is a 41 year-old Cardiovascular Critical Care Nurse in San Diego. According to Munro and Savel (2015), “specializing in one of the most sought after nursing specialties” (p. 372) makes Karen more than your average nurse.…
As a Telemetry Volunteer in the extremely busy Telemetry Department of Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, La Jolla, CA, I contributed over 300-hours to evening shifts in support of Telemetry Technicians, hospital staff, cardiovascular patients, stroke patients, and family members. More specifically, when not checking EKG monitors for malfunctioning telemetry boxes, batteries or leads, I delivered, in accordance with hospital protocols, extra care by: Maintaining, organizing and delivering clean telemetry boxes and batteries; adjusting patients’ EKG leads; replenishing supplies; transporting samples to the lab; running errands for staff; directly assisting nurses in patient’s rooms, including isolation rooms; and kindly, comforting patients…
For many Americans the reason for having a phone is strictly for calling 911. First responders and all emergency personnel work long days and even longer nights. Many rural area rescue, police, and fire departments are not taken care of like they should be. Many don’t think 9/11 was handled correctly. Research has shown if things were handled differently than many lives could have been saved.…
Injuries are a natural thing in human nature. When breaking a bone, there is a specific person who specialize in these type of situations to go to for help. When seeking a career as a physical therapist, a person must carefully look into the responsibilities this will entail, the skills one must have to succeed, plus other important aspects such as working conditions, salary, and the future of the job; however, just as important is to carefully seek out the University Of Texas Pan-American (UTPA) which will best prepare one for this profession. The tasks and responsibilities of a physical therapist include Patient Assessment: “physical therapist must perform an initial assessment of a patient’s illness or trauma in order to determine what the best course of action will be to restore mobility, alleviate pain or prevent further deterioration. During the assessment, physical therapists evaluate a patient’s ambulation, balance, coordination and control, among other physical abilities”.…
Midwifery embraces the reproductive rights of women and instead of limiting the decisions that mothers should be able to make when it comes to their birthing experience, they open up the doors to many options available to the mother without the use of medical interventions. Unlike doctors in hospitals, midwives provide extensive one-on-one health care education and counseling, as well as engage in shared decision-making with their clients and patients. The decision to determine when, where and how a child is brought into this world is not one that many mothers get to experience unless a midwife is chosen due to the lack of knowledge of women’s rights. Childbearing women frequently are not aware of their legal right to make health care choices…
“Some things that will turn people away are sickness, burnout, shirft work, long shift hours” (“utah.gov”). Like the shift hours may turn people away because they have to work at night or on the holidays. Nurses also may have to work longer shifts for other staff members that can’t make it in that day. “For we who nurse, our nursing is something which, unless we are making progress every year, every month, every week, we are going back.…
Growing up I always wanted to be a firefighter, what little boy didn't? When I was twelve I got lucky enough to be able to call a Dallas firefighter my Stepdad. He began bringing me to the firehouse, this sparked my interest in fire/medicine as a field. EMT and eventually paramedicine would be the beginning of my path on the journey to becoming a firefighter alongside my stepfather. I let go of this dream over the last two years as I wen't to the oilfield chasing money, but it was always unfulfilling as there was no benefit for people.…
