Pros And Cons Of Being An American

To be an American can mean something different to almost everyone. Most people might would say that to be an American would be to have some political aspect, or to be excessively supportive of the military. Others would say Americans are all about their rights with their guns, sloppy bacon cheeseburgers, or Gittin’ r’ Done. I, on the other hand, say something completely different; something on the opposite end of the scale. America isn’t all about football, fried foods, or the glories of the faux, over dramaticized American dream life. Being an American means being spoiled, dependent, and “free” on a leash.

Americans have always upheld the gracious title of “The Land of the Free”, yet the laws and practices of the land should undermine our confidence in this statement. We get the sense of freedom, although have you ever really stopped to think about our rights and how differently they seem to be applied throughout each ethnicity or through gender, religion, social status, etc.? In a sense we are free, but we aren’t. We think we are doing as we please, especially as an adult, but we’re actually on some form of restricted schedule throughout our lives; and it only gets harder as an adult. We go to school to get an education, to get a job, get jobs, get homes somewhat in the areas of our jobs and a car or two that we need to get to our jobs, just to have to work the job we hate and pay them all off. Then, we work work work our lives away, paying taxes, and living off of the government for years and years. If not living off of them, living with them or for them. Have you ever thought about WHY we all seem to get up early just to rush, rush, rush to get to work or school and then work, work, work, to achieve such education or promotion we have to work towards. We stress, stress, stress over almost everything, when in reality we’re blessed, blessed, blessed. Over the years, we’ve gotten a grasp of a tighter, stricter schedule pushing more advanced school work onto children, changing the requirements and the capability of getting a job, etc. Taking things under a lot more pressure for most people. The irony is that some of the richest "workers" in America do nothing but shuffle papers and surf the internet all day for a living, achieving a wild, single lifestyle, while others bust their behinds all week to get a rewarding $400 or less a week paycheck just to slide by and struggle. A huge percentage of unemployed people collect welfare

What makes an American, ‘American’? The answer to this question will vary greatly depending on the respondent’s beliefs and cultural background. As the United States continues to grow and evolve in areas such as race, ethnicity and culture, the image of America changes as well. In an article entitled ‘Nation or Notion’ by Patrick J. Buchanan, he argues that Americans need a common identity based upon ancestry and culture to survive as a country. On the other hand, an article entitled ‘What Does It Mean to Be an “American”?’ by Michael Walzer argues that America does not need a common identity.…

Not only do the workers toil for many hours, but also they receive little to no vacation days. Colleen, a worker at The Maids, states that “what [she] would like is to be able to take a day off now and then… if I had to… and still be able to buy groceries the next day” (120). Therefore, these workers must sacrifice their physical health in order to sustain themselves. This leads to tolls on mental health, too. Eventually, says Ehrenreich, one loses his/her will to continue working with little reward; “[i]f you hump away at menial jobs 360-plus days a year, does some kind of repetitive injury of spirit set in” (106)?…

What does it mean to be American? Does it mean to live in a society which is based on the pillar that everyone deserves a chance? Or, is it one where everyone is driven by the notion of greed? It may be both. Giovanni states that despite our current catastrophes, America is a beacon shining the way for other nations– but, only from living in foreign nations does she realize to embrace her American ways.…

According to the article "What is an American" there are many reasons Americans are who they are. The article uses negation to show what Americans are not in this quote, "A country that had no bread for him, whose fields procured him no harvest, who met with nothing but the frowns of the rich, the severity of the laws, with jails and punishments; who owned not a single foot of the extensive surface of the planet" (J. Hector 32). The meaning of an American by this article is that they have a country to give food, and they can harvest their own food and be free. In "What is an American" it uses function and also states," The American ought, therefor, to love this country much better than that where either he or his forefathers were born"…

To be an American means to have freedom unlike any other country in the world. We can vote for our president, pick the job and career that we want, get a good education and say the Pledge of Allegiance. You choose how to live your life and which path to take, while at other countries you are forced what job you will have and what you will do for a living, but you have no say in that decision. The United States of America is the best place for anyone who wants to make something of themselves when they’ve never had a chance. 1984 Conformity in America America: land of the free, right? Well, maybe not. 1984 portrays a totalitaristic society that seems far from the world we live in today, at first glance. But at a closer look, there are many chilling parallels between these two universes which are typically thought to be opposites. Of course, there are resemblances in surveillance and maybe even propaganda, but we generally do not believe conformance exists in our society.…

The “American way of life” is a way of life which is constantly redefining and evolving itself for the conditions and times it finds itself in; it is not a static definition. The America I believe in finds conviction and compassion in itself to fight for harmony and justice for all, not just for a chosen few. I believe this America seeks to know the right things and conquers it, not just for show or a political cause, but because we truly believe doing what is right even if a great challenge or difficulty is worth all the effort and sacrifice. I believe America would face its challenges with originality and innovation and not stupidity or untruth. The America I believe in is not not blinded by egos, but uses a leadership pole and fights for…
