On August 5, 1585 Jane Langley had witnessed one of the most scariest and disappointing events she could remember. 118 colonist, including herself, that had been hoping for a better life in America had just arrived in Roanoke; an island off the coast of North Carolina. As Jane and her family waited on the supply ship to come in, she watched her little brother. Her brother was a short, blond, four year old who knew nothing on what was going on. All of a sudden she heard her mother scream in panic and saw her father and every man that could, run to the shore. The supply ship had just crashed into shore because of the choppy water. Was she The sight was horrific, their future just floating away, colonist get swept under by the waves crashing into them. All you could hear were people screaming and crying watching their family str ugliest for the last time. Jane was one of the lucky ones that’s father survived and managed to save a few items.

For the past 3 months, the now 98 colonist, had been desperately in need of more supplies. They were running out of food, farming materials, and most importantly hope. Even though Jane was only 13, she knew what could happen, with diseases spreading and death on the horizon. Her parents were still hopeful, and Jane wondered if her family had been blinded by the thought of starting their lives over again.
“Jane dear, come on, we ought to go to the farewell now,” Her father said.
“Yes father, I’m rushing!” Jane yelled back.
The farewell was a goodbye to John White as he sailed from Roanoke to England and back. As Jane rushed outside, she saw a shadow flying by. She didn’t know that soon to come that shadow would become her and her colony’s greatest allie, but she shook the thought off and caught back up with her father.
